I mean 1 kit; one manufacturer. what would you pick?
kit and manufacturer.
I only ask cause Ive never done airplanes. but Im curious about the detail and painting techniques possible with planes that arent really used in cars which is what I ussually do.
so rather than taking a stab in the dark on what is a good kit based on box art; Im asking you guys.
What color is the ocean? You will get just as many answers. It is hard to pick a model to build, because there are so many out there. Break it down into what scale you want to build. Do you want USAF, Navy, RAF, Russian or what? Narrow down your choices.
Actually, it’s better to take a stab in the dark. Just grab a kit and jump in with both feet.
To be safe grab a tamiya, hasegawa, Accurate Miniatures or eduard - they usually fall together by themselves. If you want real hard to near impossible but lots of room for detailing go hi-tech, mpm, or FM
Have to agree with berny13 and wibhi2 to a degree. Based off the mode/mindset that I’m in currently, I’d have to say I’d pick Revell-Monogram’s 1/48 F-105D “Thud”. Reason I pick this kit is because I’m currently into USAF aircraft from the Vietnam War and I feel the “Thud” is sort of an “unsung hero” compared with the Phantom.
i agree with Rjkplasticmod.the f-4 is a really good kit . i have a few in the stash.i mostly build the ww2 planes but on i tried the f-4 and i was hooked. so i have mostly been building the modrn aircraft (f-14,f-15,f-16 etx.).well try an aircraft model i tried a car and i build them too!-brad
I think my best advice would be: pick an aircraft you really like first, then find out what’s the best kit out there in your preferred scale. If your shelves are tailored to, say 1/24 cars, 1/72 or 1/48 would be a practical idea, but this is highly dependent on the plane in question. If you like B-52s you’re outta luck[:D]. Between us here at the aircraft forum I think we built them all, so you’re almost certain to get some good advice.
well; I think I want 1/72… thats like a foot long give or take right? hmmm thatd be a 72 foot long plane; rather large perhaps for a fighter jet…
I donno lol
I like modern fighters; just like modern cars. I lied; I forgot I had built 2 planes, a F14 and that reconosance(sp?) plane. Id love to build a really detailed version of an F22 if such a kit exists.
I dont know planes at all; I dont know american vs russion ect. I couldnt name 5 planes if I had to Im in it for the love of modeling rather than the love of planes. I love cars typicly; so thats what I model. but their kinda repetitive. 1 isnt all that different than the next. not that I mind; but a plane might give me some room to grow. but at the same time; choosing is difficult.
Those F-22 kits aren’t the best quality around (based on what I’ve seen on the net). If you want to have a go at some specific aircraft modeling techniques (preshading, washes, camo paintjobs), the A-10 should be A LOT more fun. I can heartily recommend the 1/48 Monogram A-10. It’s not a new kit but easily the best A-10 out there and it features some nice detail (like open airbrakes). You’ll certainly enjoy building that one. Oh, by the way: in this instance don’t even contemplate the Tamiya kit: it’s a real disappointment and too expensive at that. For specific help there’s a few A-10 community guys around here that would be glad to assist you I’m sure. Check out: http://www.warthogpen.com/
Now of course you do have another option regarding A-10’s, and that’s the 1/32 Trumpeter kit. Certaily impressive but it will never fit on your shelf and (again based on what I’ve read on the web) it’s not completely without fit problems. Maybe not something you’d enjoy as a first (-ish) aircraft kit.
Go ahead, try the Monogram kit and post pics!

I understand that for 1/72 A-10s, the Italeri kit is quite good and presents no real fit issues.
I’ve built the Academy 1/72 A-10 and its quite nice as far as construction goes, but the decals are problematic (as they are in all Academy kits) but aftermarket decals are easy enough to find for the A-10.
The Academy F8 Crusader in 1/72,
If you were asking any peroid plane the answer is easy.
Any Eduard Kit, The best mfg. hands down for 1/48 and 1/72 kits.
that the monogram kit? its so cheap! hell I pay 45$ for a car model thats half the size and probably half the detail! so this is the best kit I can get of the A-10? I mean Im willing to pay more if it gets me alot more detail… not that Im looking to blow money. but I want to really go crazy with it and I dont want the kit itself to be the unrealistic part when Im all done.
Me i would have to say my F-16 concepts or any stealth aircraft or the other idea i had and that is to build my very own concept F-18 that i designed which is based on the F-18 design but entirely stealth.
The RM kit is the best kit of the A-10 out there. If you’re desperate to spend a lot of money on a kit, then buy the RM and drop the rest on the plethora of aftermarket upgrades out there for this kit. I hear the Aires cockpit upgrade for the A-10 is amazing.
Bottom line, the RM is the best option for an A-10.
If you want an A-10, Revell-monogram is definately the way to go. If you wanted another choice of modern aircraft, how about the F-15? It’s availiable as an air superiority fighter or as a fighter/bomber and there’s plenty of chioce of kits out there.
