[I work on aircraft for a living ,so a great deal of our off time at work is shooting the bull about aircraft. A question came up pertaining to an unknown aircraft featured in the old 1930’s classic movie “King Kong” You know the scene ,Kong is on the Empire State Bldg. and aircraft is called upon do do him in.We cannot agree on the above mentioned aircraft. I’m stumped, in the movie its clearly a 2 seat airplane with a rear gunner,.I’m thinking that it is a Hollywoodism, and in fact the long shots of the planes are in fact Boeing F 4’s, the close up shot s with the rear gunner is Holly wood bull. Any body out there know anything about this? Yours oatswilly PS I’d love to fancy this up with icons and such but I haven’t a clue how. I’m new to this site and VERY new to these evil computers

i haven’t a clue about your king kong question[V], but re the icons[:)][:D][8D], i think that when you start a topic or reply to one you should get a “smilie” list to your left…just click on one and it will appear where you left your cursor…my god, i’m sounding like i work in IT and have a clue about all this stuff!![:0] (which i don’t[:p])
for “advanced” smilies, click on “show entire smilie list” (also to your left hopefully), and follow the same procedure…
if you still can’t get them up, or can’t see the list in the 1st place , then [banghead]…no, only kidding, i’m sure some of the other guys here will help you out…they’re all v friendly[:D]

Yes, we’re mostly very friendly. Even if we do get into “spirited discussions” every once in awhile… 
Anyhoo, here’s a studio still which may or may not help in identifying the aircraft in the film. It’s a poor image and not all of the aircraft are too clear, although I get the impression that there’s more than one ‘type’ in this photo.
Whether or not each one represents an actual aircraft type that existed, I have no idea. [sigh]
But they used a combination of real aircraft and models in the film. I’ve come across several types that are close to what’s in this and other photos but none are spot-on matches. That seems to indicate that mostly models were used and that they may not each have been an entirely faithful replica of an actual aircraft.
That’s all I can tell you at the moment, besides, I’m starting to ramble; as usual! [:p]

I read an article several years ago in either Amazing Figure Modeler or Modellers’ Resource about the King Kong planes. The two seater was a model built up for the movie. The other planes flying are from the Boeinig F4B family as noted earlier.

I don’t know a lot about the planes (think they are F4B4) but one thing I know for sure is that he two guys you see closer in one plane are Schoedsack and Cooper, the two directors of the movie; just for “la petite histoire”
In fact, in the movie, Schoedsack (‘Pilot’) and Cooper (‘Gunner’) are the ones who actually kill Kong!
Another bit of trivia, They paid some pilots at the local airfield to scramble and fly around for a while, but didn’t explain wht they were filming them. The aircrew were so impressed that they attached bunting and streamersto the aircraft, thus ruining the shot!
It had to be refilmed later!

I figured movie close-up shots were ficticious models,( Damn shame though ) To Torio, that bit of trivia was completely a rather interesting surprise.Good to hear from the good folk in France! Team -tordado seems to not only confirm Torio but enhances even more to trivia.[:)] I think this site might be a hoot ! Nmayhew .
