ICARUS/LIBERTY 1 BUILD (Completed 4-18-21)

LOL. That is funny.

In this case, I think printing regaulary does keep the heads clean. What a racket these printers are. Either way you are forced to use their expensive ink. I think they designed it this way. Heck…I cycled my printer through two cleanings and my brand new black ink cartridge, not even used yet, dropped to 1/4th available. I’ll have to go get another one. How rediculous is that! Son of a … Grrrr.

BTW. Clapper says howdy. He also says you are the man. [Y]

Is that the tech version of ‘walking it off’? [;)]

Lol, glad to hear she’s back to working well!

Funny but true!

You left off 'social distancing" and “including a TP stash.”

Sadly, this overt bit of highway robbery persists right out in the open, unchecked.

The printer makers deliberately price their printers under break even. and Supply you with no more than quarter-full ink reservoirs.

None of which is helped by the clean up run on every printer power-on which uses a criminal amount of ink which is just dumped in a waste reservoir in the bottom of the printer.

It’s not uncommon that an ink refill costs 150% of the printer’s cost. That on purpose. Ink mark up is (depending on who you rely upon) between 800 & 1200% (offset, slightly by the long overhead time sitting on the shelves.) Oh, and those widgets the printers force onto your screen’s desktop? Hopelessly biased. They report all sorts of things that encourage only buying high-markup ink, not better printer use/maintenance. [grrr]

There was, in an egghead tech journal I read, and excellent economic analysis showing that it was better to just replace cheap inkjets when the ink goes dry. Which is patently absurd, and irresponsibly wasteful, but, there it is. The fact that there is very little to differentiate between an $80 3-in-1 and a $300 cersion, this is even more striking.

Now, dye-sublimation printers are different; but, those are specialty items bought be people who do know better, and are likely to come storm your corporate castle with burning pitchforks if you pull shenanigans on them.

Sadly, color fused toner printers are hinting towards the same evil as inkjets.

My HP Envy was destined for the bin just before this plague hit, to be replaced wit ha Brother color-toner machine (as I have no need for a fax machine, and virtually none for scanning).

I commiserate with your printer woes, and sasly, cannot offer better hope nor news on that front.

Thanks Capn. That was an excellent breakdown of the problem and it shows just how bad the problem truly is. It is very sad indeed.

Lol. So true.

At this point I needed to deal with the structures noted below. The raised ring is in the way of what I plan to do, and the bars, I just didn’t care for. And if I did care for them, it would have taken an unholy amount of time to clean them up. It would be easier to remove and replace. I am not sure if I will replace them though.

I am probably repeating myself but this plastic is not much fun to work with. This material is a bear to sand. I used a grinder to remove the bulk of those details followed by a heavy dose of 200 grit sandpaper.

Again, this is not much to look at, but this little step sucked up over three hours of time. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip is the sound of this build. [B] [;)]

What’s next? A search for some toilet paper? Negative. Happily, I have enough, and Clapper doesn’t use any. What can I tell ya… he likes to rough it.

The plan, as I see it now, is to make a bulkhead that follows the shape of the sleep chambers while framing the opening of the ship. The idea here is to create a frame that blocks some undesirables, and at the same time, provide a nice aesthetic look. Following that will be another bulkhead. This one is intended to be removeable. Engine bells are attached here, and I am leaning toward attaching the emergency (LED) light to it too.

End of update.

Bakster: It all looks good to me from here. Sigh, I know what you mean- when a project just seems to be more and more work… [:(]

I missed a couple days, shame on me. It’s not as if I’m busy or something…

Back the the Cap’s ink comments, dye sub and laser are options, but not everyone knows that pro labs use (…drumroll please…) inkjet printers.

The prosumer and pro models at least have much larger ink carts that though very expensive, are much less cost per milliliter of ink. I recall some guys installing systems where they’d have jugs of ink feeding the individual color printheads by rubber tubes. These used to be commercially available, no idea if they still are.

But you hit the nail on the head, color printing at home on consumer printers is a rip-off by design. The rationization for pro-grade home printing is that though it is very expensive, one is able to achieve pro-lab quality results and have absolute control over everything.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program, scale modeling by Stevie…

EDIT: …and Clapper. (Oops!)

I don’t mean to complain about it, though maybe I am. Truth is… I can’t go too fast because I need to keep Nino rolling along in Icarus fodder. [;)]

Greg-- Thanks for the additional printer commentary. If I ever decide to dive into a better printer–I know the guys to talk to! [Y]

Quoting Hee Haw…

…or I could just advise you now. DON"T DO IT!!! [:P]

PS, those folk from Hee Haw probably know about photo printing than I do these days, I’ve been away from it for so long. OTOH, as I understand it, not much has changed in the last 10-15 yrs anyway.

I got the biggest kick out of that show back in the day.

That is the best advice for sure.

Yeah. Hee Haw was a hoot!!!

Don’t sweat it. Sometimes you want to just finish the blasted thing and move on to something else.

And I know what you guys mean about printers. I have one at home but I’ve been using the work one for the few times I need to print something out for about a decade now.

Amen Brother, I am there. But I am going to stick with it, or it won’t get done. When this build is finished you will hear a hoot that reverberates around the world. People will say, “What was that?” People in the know will say, “Oh, that’s just bakster. He just finished the Icarus build.”

I will buy a big fat juicy steak, throw it on the grill, and pop a few beers. My neighbors will say, “What’s the occasion?” I will say, " I just finished the Icarus build." They will say, “Oh! No dang way! Party on man!”

Lol.

Yeah man. I thought about the work printer too but us poorly sales people only have access to non-color printers. Dagnabbit.

If you grill the steak outside while dressed in an ape costume I swear the neighbors will talk about it for years…

[:D]

I like that idea.

Oh man… that is a hoot! I like the idea as well. And you know… you guys are welcome to the party too. I will cover the cost of the food and drink… you cover the cost of your ape costumes.

I’ll bring the bananas.
