I tried Castrol Super Clean for paint stripping

After reading this article several times in the past I decided to try out the Castrol Super Clean. http://www.bonediggers.com/1-3/strip/strip.html

This stuff is indeed as amazing as the article says! [:0]
I have an old 1:48 A-4 Skyhawk wing that I have had for years and use as a test piece for painting on and I tried that out. This wing probably has 5 or 6 coats of MM enamels, Floquil lacquers, and MM acrylics sprayed on it, so I put enough Castrol Super Clean in an old plastic margarine container to submerge most of one half of the wing. I left the wing in there for 90 minutes and went out in the garage to check on it. To my surprise the paint was wrinkled as if you had sprayed Jasco paint remover on it. Wow! [:0]
I figure that after about 4 or 5 hours I could probably put on some rubber gloves, and eye protection and scrub the paint right off with an old toothbrush.
I am still watching to see how it does but so far I am amazed at the ability of this stuff to remove paint. It is much faster than Easy-Off and cheap too.
I bought the smaller 32 oz spray bottle at Kragen Auto for $3.79, and the gallon jug of it was only $7.99. [tup]

Hey Mike

Thanks for posting that report. I’ve been waiting to see what this stuff can do. I still haven’t found a local supplier for it, though. Sounds like it’s pretty readily available, though.

Please give us an update after you’ve had more time to work with it.

I have used CSC with great success!!! I love the stuff!!!

I buy mine at Wal-mart, it’s 5.99 for a gallon jug!!!

A product call Simple Green works very well too. CSC is a great product and most everyone carries it.

Does Simple Green work on enamels and lacquers though?
I thought it only worked on acrylics?

Mike

I was going to try WalMart but thought that they wouldn’t carry it.
That is a good price for sure.

Stinger,

Do you have a Pep Boys around there? They may have it.

Mike

Here is a photo of that wing I tried the Castrol Super Clean on today.
This soaked for about 8 hours in this product and while rinsing it off with hot water I rubbed the surface with an old toothbrush.
It may clean this well with less time in the solution, as I didn’t try it at an earlier time today. I did however notice the paint wrinkling up pretty badly as I mentioned already after only 90 minutes in this product.

Mike

Pep Boysand Auto Zone Have it too!!!

Great stuff, butt… It ate the CA on the M1A1 I striped, no big deal it is just for test painting (had several coat of paint and zimmert in spots) but some thing to watch for.

one thing to also consider, you can strain it through a air mask & reuse it over several times and reuse it. i have several gallons of it in a big plastic jug i got from a restruant which cooking oil came in

Thanks Mike, I am from Canada. Is there an similar product availible here that you know
of?
Thanks Mccaber

They don’t sell this Castrol product in Canada? I would think they would.
I am not aware of anything else like it except for Easy-Off Oven Cleaner which doesn’t work quite as well but is still good.

Mike

I just saw it at Wal-Mart here in Vancouver.

I left my car body in for a week and then removed the paint. Didn’t harm the plastic a bit.
