I need oil colors...

I am looking for somewhere on the internet to get a few different oil colors. I need to find a rust colored oil, and also an asphalt color as well. I have the Windsor/Newton 8 pc set that Hobby Lobby sells, as well as a tube of Paynes Grey. Does everyone make there own with these two colors, or is there a certain retailer that someone would recommend. Thanks Guys.

You should check out MIG’s line of “502 Abteilung” oils. They are formulated especially in coors for Armor modeling. There are several different coors of rust colors, and weathering colors like mud and dirt.

If you’re financially pinched, I would simply mix my own colors from what you’ve got, or visit a craft chain like Michael’s/AC Moore’s for some coupon specials.

brutus, have you checked the single colors that Hobby Lobby sells. Look for burnt Umber or burnt sienna. Also check if there is a Micheals in your area. They similiar to HL.

Joe

Leopard man…I have both those colors in my stash, do you use them as is to make a rust color, or mix them with a different color to tone them up or down ?

Doog, thanks, I’m gonna go look for/at the MIG stuff right now. Thanks.

Do either of you have a suggestion for asphalt colored oils… I have Ivory Black and Paynes Grey. Thanks Again.

Micheals is what you need man, I get a 40% off in the newspaper every week, can’t beat that!

Gotta ask, Brutus–why the heck would you want "asphalt’ colored oil? You’d be better off just mixing and matching your own shades out of blacks and grays. Not a big demand for “asphalt”, I’m sure! Most people I know paint roadways in black or grey acrylics, and then maybe wash a grey over black or vice-versa. Asphalt tends ot have several different hues in it, so don’t look for one particlur shade. It wouldn’t loook reaslitic anyway in just one simple color.

Hey Doog,

I figured it probably would look better, but being out of the hobby for many years and coming back slowly over the last year, to be honest, I read a few articles, mostly in xtereme modelling, and they mention “Asphalt colored oil” in a few articles, and I thought it might be something all the cool kids are using…lmao

I honestly think you’re right, I have a tube of Ivory Black, and Payne’s Grey, I’m gonna play with those and see where I get. The guys in those articles were mostly using it for exhaust and engine work. I also checked out the MIG website, for the second time, and with all the various products for weathering(washes, filters, pigments, PE, etc…) let’s just say I’m still trying to get my tongue off the floor. Thanks for all the advice, future and past, and happy modelling.

Glad I could help, brutus! [:)]

I use tempera for painting pavement, be it asphalt or concrete, if that’s what you’re doing… 1.77 a pint… Oils are too damned expensive for painting any ground work, IMHO…

The work great for coloring your groundwork as you mix it too…

[#ditto]. I bought a set of 20 colors for around $20 at Michaels. It has all the standard colors and a few extras you’ll like…MORE than enough for the average armor guy. I recommend mixing your own shades to get the custom colors you need. Mix a good size blob and then tint/shade it to get some variety and add interest and realism to your work!

MIG=$$$ in my mind, but I like the idea!..what do these run per tube doog?

AC Moore’s will be pretty inexpensive and you can buy the smaller tubes to begin with.

I have found that English red is the color that most accurately represents rust (on a ship at least). Also venetian red.

Then the old standbuys of sienna type colors.

MiG products are way overpriced. Don’t buy into the marketing. Same thing with Tamiya weathering powders! …When you can get pastel sticks that will last forever for half the price and a better color selection at an art store.

I also go to Pearl Paint which is a really good art store in the Northeast. Much better brush selection than AC Moore. Although AC Moore is good for everyday stuff.

Thanks for all the input guys. As I told Doog, I saw several build articles, mostly in Xtreme Modelling magazine that called for " asphalt " colored oils. The one that comes to mind was Ruben Gonzales’ “Enemy behind the door”(awesome build, but that’s another post…) I have pretty much all the weathering stuff I can amass, so I should start building, and I’ll post some pics soon, hopefully this weekend. Thanks to all, Happy Modelling.

I have been searching without luck for Windsor and Newton 21ml tubes, just finding the bigger 37ml tubes though. For my current needs the smaller ones would last a while I am sure, and they would be cheaper (at least logics dictates so.) If anyone knows where to purchase the 21ml tubes I would be most appreciative.

Um…[:-^]…full disclosure here, Steve; I’m not sure, as I got all mine courtesy of MIG Productions…[:I]

But on the MIG site:

http://www.migproductionsforums.com/shop/index.php?cPath=25&osCsid=m5515ch0h4ldfi9o5q2blrutk0

…they are listed as available for a mere E3.00! THREE EURO’S! About $5.00! At current exchange rates, that’s CHEAPER THAN DOMESTIC OILS AVAILABLE IN AC Moore’s!

As I said, on the MIG site here:

http://www.migproductionsforums.com/shop/index.php?cPath=25&osCsid=m5515ch0h4ldfi9o5q2blrutk0

…they are cheaper even than regular Windsor ans Newton oils!

I honestly have to say as well, that the “marketing” is no different than any other product. They are oil paints formulated in specific Armor modeling colors, and do what they were designed to do VERY well. I have given the MIG products an extensive review here: /forums/5/1053435/ShowPost.aspx#1053435 --and found them to sincerely be great modeling products, or at least certainly as equal to or better than “standard” modeling oils.

MiG makes good products, my point is particularly with their Powders/pigments( I think I paid $7.99 for the small plastic jar at the lhs) they are twice as expensive as buying a grumbacher stick and filing it into powder. I used thier rust on a very involved BR52 build of 8 months and was satisfied. However they were simply no different than my grumbacher pastel filings at half the price, and their acrylic fixer for $13.99 is a total waste of money.

I paid roughly $4.99 plus tax for the last tube of windsor and newton 37mm oil tube I bought at AC Moore. Now AC Moore is a discount store tht doesn’t have the quality of a real art store, however these tubes are the same as the real art store.

I just saw the Mig’s for $5.50 online, plus shipping for 20ml tubes.

Another huge advantage of going to a real art store is that for very serious modelers, they will have a range of shades (say sienna for rust use) of about ten differing hues of sienna.

I guess I should have used the word hype, not marketing. Its not just mig as I said previously. The Tamiya powders are one fifth the volume for three times the price of grinding pastel sticks.

Its pretty crazy. I don’t know many decades long modelers that buy into it. Of course kits have gone through the roof as well. I can’t buy a kit at the LHS, haven’t in ten years and Tower online which has been my supplier has had prices wildly fluctuating over the last 2 months. One day they had the Revell Fletcher for $94 the next day… $112.

Welcome to this wonderful economy of ours. I’ve seen so many guys bail on the hobby because they ca’nt afford it. But that’s another post, in another thread, on another website all together. Unless you’re Doog, then you get them for free !!!

JK Doog…lmao[bow]

$5.00 isn’t bad…FREE is better.

PM on the way doog!
