I am, was working on 1/48 scale Accurate Miniatures Avenger. I’m decaling it for the lead flight 19 craft, landing gear up flying over water…I had planned on entering it into my local hobbytown US contest coming up in April. It was really looking nice
All i have left is the turret canopy to put on… so I bring it out to dust it off. I use a soft dry brush and then a swab damped with rubbing alcohol. ( I got this tip from Testor’s overpriced Modeler’s Technique Guide)
Dont waste you money on it. only thing good is paint swatch list.
I start wiping underneath the wing and what happens?? the paint started frosting over like canopy with super glue… It won’t rub off, it won’t wash off, What the hell?
Is the only thing I can do is repaint?
I used Tamiaya enamel paint, Model Masters Ultra Gloss clear on it
I don’t know if this will work for you, but I had something similar happen to my Beaufighter about a year ago. I used Tamiya acrylics for the paint and had just put the decals on with some micro-sol setting solution when the frosting appeared. Any way, a coat of Future took care of it.
Frosting around the decals:
After doing the Future:
I’m not familiar with either product, but is sounds as if the alcohol is attacking the clear coating. Is it possible that the MM Ultra Gloss is acrylic? Or maybe it’s just slightly soluble in isopropyl alcohol.
Sometimes such surface distress will gradually go away. Set the thing aside in a warm (not hot) place with good ventilation for a week and see if it improves.
If not, sand and repaint or strip and repaint. Or try Aggieman’s cure (just saw it as I posted.)
Devildog99,
I feel for you. I had a similar thing happen with the exact same plane! I built this about 2003. It was my first model by Accurate Miniatures. The detail is fantastic. I added the Eduard interior and flaps photo etch sets. I also wired up the landing gear brakes and the bomb bay. The 50 cal barrel in the turret is from a Polish company and has all of the cooling holes drilled in it. This model took a long time to build - about a year. I was just about finished with it and was just spraying on the final finish of clear flat when the plane turned white. It turns out I used Tamiya flat base - bad choice!! I exercised extreme restraint and set the model aside for a month. I finally had to soak the whole thing in brake fluid to remove the paint - and decals too. A lot of the parts fell off and I had to replace the wire in the bomb bay. What a mess. It cleaned up pretty well but took some work. I learned a few lessons there. Be careful what you paint and don’t rush things. I think the plane turned out pretty good in the end tho. I has never won any awards - but I really like it and I guess that’s what counts.
Ouch! I made that mistake to, sprayed on flat base, ended up with a frosted model. The thing is, flat base is a product to flatten gloss paints and coats. It should never be used to as a “stand alone” coat.
Take it easy, apply a coat of future, let it cure, then reapply a flat coat. I recommend Polyscale flat, a water based “safe” matte finisher that is excellent.

Listen to Crockett, he’s got it right.
thanks guys. I tried the Future last night and its working just fine, checked this morning.
Obviously it was a reaction with the clear coat and alcohol. The paint itself was never harmed.
Future is the cure-all for model making thats for sure. Thanks everyone for your advice!!! you probably save an Avenger from finding the Bermuda Triangle of my wall.
