I absolutely hate clear coating!

That’s a better result. So you fully stripped all the paint off and tried again? What changes did you make in your process this time?

Stripped and repainted like before. Used Tamiya clear gloss via airbrush instead of the Testors wet look clear out of the rattle can.

Luckily I have good advice from y’all

Clear coats are the freaking bane of my life.it’s always too little, too much, not uniform enough, not thinned enough, too much thinned, too far, too close, temperature is too hot, too cold…

I’m doing aircrafts so we get all sorts of angles and traps like the wingroots, which doesn’t help.

I have a very bad combo of lighting and ventilation system which means I hardly see what I’m doing, so I gave up on airbrushing and went to Mr hobby cans instead, at least psi/thinner are taken care of hehe. Even so I didn’t go wet enough on my latest project. Had to spray again. Another layer, more thickness filling up the details… Urgh.

Anyway yeah I hate clear coating too haha

Amen I say to you brother!!

Yeah me too! I just ordered a can each of Vallejo clear and matte as my mixtures for the airbrush aren’t cutting it. I’ll test them on my Peggy bomber I’m building.

I have been fortunate not to run into a problem with clear coats but everytime I apply one, particularly during the weathering stages of a project, I live in fear that it goes on too thick and fogs up the finish. I am probably too paranoid but a bit of extra vigilance is worth the peace of mind…at least until something goes wrong!

I really like Alclad Aqua Gloss and Alclad Klear Kote Flat.
I also have had sucess with AK Gauzy Shine Enhancer.
The Vallejo stuff is good too, just make sure that ypu use their thinner and flow improver with it

I have used Vallejo Matt Varnish from a rattle can but I find it is more semi-gloss than flat. I have had consistent success with Tamiya XF-86 Flat Clear thinned 3:1 with Tamiya X-20A thinner. I have been using Pledge Revive Floor Gloss when I need a gloss coat. It does not require thinning and is self-levelling…but alas it is no longer available so when my bottle is empty it is on to something else.

I have the vallejo stuff for airbrushing,it’s pretty flat, but the Alclad stuff is really flat

I have long struggled with flat coats — it’s always such a precarious time in a model’s final stages to be blasting it with such a dicey procedure.

Right now, I’m relying on Vallejo’s ultra matte poly varnish through my airbrush. Seems to be pretty forgiving, as long as it’s thinned properly and sprayed a little wet. I use a 0.5mm needle at about 25psi.
