Thanks Ray should I use Flat or just regular Olive Drab Im planning on using Model Masters spray cans,Or testor for the flat…

I’d use flat OD, but then I’m no painting expert. Early VN birds had high vis gloss OD scheme (FS 14087). This was quickly replaced with Flat Olive Drab and Lo vis markings. The nose is also flat black. Here are a few pics that might help:

This is actually one of the early YUH-1D’s, but it shows the early high vis scheme:

Here is a UH-1C of the 281st Intruders painted in the typical Olive Drab seen throughout most of the war:

As you can imagine, though, there was some variation. Check this pic. The door is a totally different shade than the rest of the helo:

Basiaclly, there are lots of variations on the OD scheme that can be found if yu look through VN pics. I hope that helps a little.

Hi thanks that makes everything clear,Im painting a very large UH1 that is a turbine powered Rc Model for a friend!

if all else fails and you arent happy with the OOB colors which Im sure you will find WAY too dark to your liking, you can mix your own. OD started out in WWI as a paint formula of lampblack and Insignia yellow. Depending on who made it during WWII it appeared different.

Even with post WWII paints there are a lot of color shifts and climate and dirt also take thier toll on the paint. I would add a drop or two of regular OD to faded OD, and you may also add a single drop of brown to vary it towards the bottom.

if you are painting an RC bird you will need to clear coat with a hot fuel proof dope.

enamels dont stand a chance to nitro enhanced castor oil. At least it didnt in my case!

why turbine and how are you tranlating the turbine driveshaft to reduce it for rotor speeds?
