I’ve been passing through now and again and have finally registered. My name’s Monica. My husband and I are living out in Japan, he is US Navy (P3 pilot). And I can’t see Texas from here
One of the activities I’m giving a shot at is modeling. It keeps my hands busy or else I spend money on parts for my motorcycle = $$$$$$. One of the vendors outside the BX is model sales. He had a Hasegawa 1/72 P3 Orion (VP40) model that I picked up and thought it’d be fun. In fact, our station prior was VP40 so, seemed like the thing to do.
Good to meet yall. I’m looking forward to completing this build and moving to try others.
Welcome to the forums Monica!!
Thanks Gun Tech [8D]
A few details about my supplies, I’m using a Harbor Freight compressor and siphon feed airbrush I paid about $100 total. The compressor is actually doing a very good job as far as flow is concerned and has a nice little water trap. One of my gunsmithing buddies sent the kit he uses to refinish parts, does an adequate job. Today at the home store I found the same airbrush for $8 and extra jars for $4 - I could use extras!
For paints I’m using Tamiya enamels and Testor’s enamels. I thin both with Tamiya thinner when I paint, and clean the airbrush with Testor’s airbrush thinner. This process seems to be working alright. I’ve also hand brushed a few smaller parts, but I’m not so skilled so airbrush nets better results. I need to practice.
I’m using my husband’s old drafting table that he doesn’t use anymore, plus my gunsmithing table and ever-faithful Craftsman vise. I use it quite a bit to hold parts. As a result of a broken neck from a serious car accident about 9yrs ago, I lost the use of my left arm, so working with smaller parts is a challenge.
A couple pics. I just started painting the body of the plane and have laid down the white first (boy have I learned a lot about white paint). I’ve learned quite a bit thus far in the build overall, mostly of what not to do. But it’s moving forward. I’ll make a dedicated post for this in the appropriate forum when I get more accomplished. Unfortunately I cannot find pics from building the cockpit

4x4? Motorcycle? Firearms? Gunsmithing? AND models??? My kinda woman!!! Only thing is you’re probably young enough to be my granddaughter. Oh, well. [sigh] The story of my life.
[#welcome], Monica. I think you’re gonna like it here. There are a lot of knowledgeable and skilled modelers here.
And, by the way? No one has ever worked on any of my guns 'cept me! I also “roll my own”. Don’t like “factory fodder”.
What can I say, I was the son my dad never had lol I’m glad though, I’ve always liked playing with the boys [;)]
I see you’re an airtanker guy. Always good to see the “4 props of freedom”.
I am doing a project for my son’s air guard unit. Other than that, it’s mostly airtankers and a rogue helo once in awhile.
