How to weather metal chains

Gentlemen,

I am building a BT-7 in 1:35 scale. It came with a metal tow chain. Any tips on how to weather it and make it rusty and dusty and dirty would be appreciated. Or should I just weather it like any other plastic part?

Thanks…

I would paint them, but some guys use a product called Blacken-it to weather their metal Friul Tracks, perhaps that will work also.

castelnuovo,

If its a actual steel chain you can put it in salty water to get real oxidization (rust) if this is not working try cola but be careful on how long it is submersed as it will decay the links!

If its white metal as said above the ‘blacken-it’ solution yields excellent results.

I tried salt/water on chains myself.I only achieved a slight discoloration. It might take a while longer for it to really work.

Yes that is why I suggested cola, the process is so much faster I would be scared to let sit over night!

*For all you cola drinkers put some nails in a jar over night, trust me its very harsh stuff!

Thats what i use to clean the battery post’s on my car battery.

And if it will dissolve nails and remove scale from battery posts, just think what it does to your innards on the way through! [t$t] I know, my bad.

yes but it tastes good

Try putting nails in lemon juice or wine, or beer. Cola isn’t really worse than those.
