how to thin oil paint ?

folks, how to thin oil paint ? I have tried, but can’t mix very well become so sticky instead.

Oil paint can be thinned with Linseed oil, mineral spirits or a combination of both.

where to get it ?

local art store, hobby lobby, michaels etc… a lot of places… look in the phone book for art supply stores if you dont have a hobby lobby or michaels near you…

You should be able to buy either in quarts at a home improvement store (Home Depot, Lowes etc), lumber yard or hardware store. You need to watch the linseed oil as it can sometimes turn a flat into a gloss when you don’t want it to happen.

I just remembered… Wal Mart has it too in the craft section…

oh yeah, turpentine can be used too for washes… there is an oderless formula called Turpatine I think walmart has it but definitely hobby lobby and michaels… sometimes it is called low odor turpentine substitute…

I use the high grade Turpentine sold in Artist’s Supply Stores. I don’t know what you were thinning it with, but it definitely shouldn’t be “Sticky”.

hehe, I’m in indonesia don’t have such stores (walmart, etc) but we do have ACE hardware. see if they have one.
I thin it using tamiya thinner.

Tamiya thinner may be a product for acrylics.
In any case, go to Ace nd you can get regular old paint thinner for the equivalent of a US dollar. I use this for enamels, cleaning brushed, as well as thinning oils. The finish is good enough to have garnered me quite a few awards.

I live in Thailand, For enamel paint (Tamiya, Humbrol) I thin by use the Ronsonal Fuel (The Fuel for Zippo lighter) easy to dry and easy to clean out (depend on the color you mixed) very cheap and the smell is not to bad.
