What is the best way to strip acrylic paint from a model?

I use Simple Green. Drop the parts in a tub big enough to fill with water and Simple Green until they’re covered. Then either go full-strength with the stuff or dilute it 1:1 with water. A toothbrush can be used to get the paint out of the nooks and crannies.

hey… i use amonia to strip acryls… just soak it over nite, and a\give it a light scrub if it needs it and ur good to go… and amonia is pretty cheap and easy to find… i just keep a container full of amonia, and just keep reuseing it… the only prob is the nasty smell…

I found this out by accident, Windex removes acrylic paint too! Very well i might add!

It took the black of the horizontal stab of my F-104 that I tried to remove future from![:D]

Acrylics are strange. Sometimes what works great on one brand of acrylic won’t touch another brand. I’ve used Windex, Simple Green, and Forumla 409 with some success, but it seems to vary from one brand of paint to another. Castrol Super Clean is a very good way for stripping enamel or acrylic. Haven’t tried it on normal laquers yet, but it does work fine on MM metalizers.

I agree with Scott.
Castrol Super Clean is the fastest stripper I have ever used for removing paint, enamels included. My second choice is Easy-Off oven cleaner in the yellow can.
Simple Green does work well also but takes longer to work than the others in my experience.

I gotta go with the Castrol super clean crowd on this one too. Be careful, using it with bare hands unless you actually want to lose those fingerprints. (this should go under tips and tricks for burglars)

Castrol rocks. Just make sure you don’t get the wheel cleaner

Thom,

They carry it at Kragen Auto Supply in case you can’t find it at Wal-Mart or anywhere else.
It comes in a purple jug.

Now that I have got my Castrol, do I need to dilute it at all or use it straight?

btw… Do you belong to any of the local modeler clubs in the area?

Use the Castrol Super Clean straight from the bottle.
Make sure you wear surgical gloves when you handle it because it can remove skin if left on too long. If it is a small part then soak it in the CSC, but if it is larger then you will need to pour it on a spot, let it sit for a few minutes and then scrub it with an old toothbrush or something. It is pretty potent stuff for being biodegradable.

In regards to modeling clubs, no I do not belong to any.
