How to remove decals after using MicroSol?

Applying fiddly little decals to my 1/72 Japanese armor. After “microsoling” in place and letting it set for about 45 min., I decided I would replace it with something a little more robust (camo showing through the marking making it very difficult to distinguish.
More MicroSol and water didn’t (appear to) help, so I gave it a shot of IPA. Which removed the decals and also attacked the lacquer underneath.

We learn from our mistakes, so is there a good/better way to remove decals once they have set?

If I need to remove a decal, I either use Tamiya tape or 3M blue painters tape applied firmly over the decal. I’ve had decals set for a few days after using Solvaset. . They came right off, and did not damage the surface.

Here are the stripped bits (turret, both sides), now touched up and ready for another coat of gloss and different decals.
