How to mix Tamiya Surface Primer and Tamiya Lacquer Thinner and Apply using airbrush

Hello,

I usually use the Tamiya Surface Primer in a can but I want to see how well the Tamiya Primer in a 40mL bottle works with Lacquer Thinner.

I have read that I should mix the paint and Lacquer Thinner in a 1:1 ratio. Is this correct?

Do I have to take any precautions when I use it with my Airbrush?

Would also like to know what your opinion is of Vallejo Surface Primer as opposed to Tamiya Surface Primer.

Thank you

It should work with their brand of Lacquer thinner, though the fumes are very bad, so good ventilation is suggested, and a mask goes without saying.

I’ve tried it with generic store brand lacquer with varied success. I found it worked better even more thinned than 50%, and built up lightly. Heavy coats resulted in powdered/grainy surface, likely the fault of he lacquer brand as it did dry quickly.

regards,

Jack

Use the Tamiya yellow cap laquer thinner, it works best with Tamiya acrylic paints. My mix is about 2:1 (paint to thinner) or until it resembles light milk i.e. skim milk. I usually mix in my paint cup, mix with a brush and test on the inside of the paint cup. I set my pressure to about 18-20psi, it shoots great.

I tried the Vallejo primer, and it ended up in the bin. It won’t sand and provides no better surface priming than any other alternative. I have had very good results with MRP fine surface primer and Badgers Stynylrez, the later producing next to no evidence of toxic odor and both dry quickly and sand like a dream.
