Mineral spirits will dissolve any paint but I’m not sure if I can use it. It might be too strong. What else would you use?
Hairspray was used before chipping fluids came out.
I don’t know if you used it,but chipping fluid isn’t used to dissolve paint.
The technique is to put down your basecoat,spray the fluid or Hairspray,then an acrylic paint top coat.Then water is used to remove some of the top coat revealing the undercoat.
Tojo is right, chipping fluid doesn’t dissolve the paint. It is the chipping fluid itself that dissolves when water that is applied permeates the paint, resulting in delamination. That is how hairspray and chipping fluid work–it must be applied underneath the paint you want to chip.
However, using solvent can be used to remove paint, but it looks different from the chipping that hairspray accomplishes. Mike Rinaldi has used both Windex and Tamiya Lacquer thinner to remove Tamiya Acrylics after it has been applied. I haven’t tried it myself, but you basically put a small amount on a brush and gently brush some paint away, resulting in a soft paint wear effect.
You didn’t say what kind of paint you are using, but Windex won’t dissolve Vallejo acrylics. If you use something other than Tamiya, you will have to experiment to find out what works. Mineral spirits won’t dissolve just any paint, e.g. acrylics won’t dissolve in it. It might dissolve enamels if they haven’t fully cured.
I still use cheap hair spray from the Dollar Store and get the same reults for a lot less $.
