Well, sorry if this belongs in the painting forum, but I figured you armor gurus would know best. I went to my LHS today looking for some paint, mainly Dunkelgelb. They didnt have it, so I bought some “Model Master Chrome Yellow” Basically just a brightish yellow, and “Model Master Leather” with the thought of mixing them into some dunkelgelb, along with some black. So does anybody know what colors I should mix to get a fairly accurate Dunkelgelb? Im not looking for a perfect match to the original color chips, just a basic reference. Thanks, and like I said, Ill move it If you think I should.
Tamiya Dark Yellow is what I use.
The German “Dark Yellow” has been a much debated color on these and many boards. Color wartime photos show marked differences as well, between vehicles and theaters of operation. If you don’t want to use acrylic Tamiya Dark Yellow, you might want to start with a sand color with a touch of olive green. The Tamiya product has a distinct greenish hue when sprayed thru the Ab and fully cured.

Mix the Leather colour in with the Chrome Yellow, and go from there. Start with a 80/ 20 ratio respectively. I would’nt use any Black though, stick with the brown colours and maybe add a touch of Olive Green.
The Leather is a powerful and rich color and has lots of red overtones. I wouldn’t mix it in first but instead recommend lightening the Chrome Yellow to knock it down first before altering the basic color chemistry with the Leather. The Chrome Yellow is going to be very bright and as a primary color, will be the dominant one in your mix, so you have to be prepared to mix up a large quantity to make this work right. I would recommend lightening it first with a Light Gray to get it to a pale shade and then slowly introduce a tan or sand color to get it to lean towards the darker yellow spectrum. Mixing paint can be an adventure, just be sure to keep track of what you add and how much in case you ever need to do it again in the future. [:D]
Pactra A104 - Panzer Dunkelgelb 1943 is good for German armor.
link for Dunkelgelb
[#ditto] Good enough for me. I don’t want to think about ratios and all that.
I agree, that’s why I think Ian went to the LHS looking for the Testor’s Dunkelgelb pre-mixed…but his problem is that it wasn’t available…so he’s looking to “roll his own”…which I admit would be an interesting challenge and exercise, but then paint mixing is truly an area where you can achieve something unique…I keep a whole set of empty mix jars for various occasions just to play around with as the need arises. Ya Wbills got it right, and Ya Ive had some interesting adventures and disaster,. One time I tried replicating early war panzer bluish gray, and ended up with a sky blue panzer! it was…“unique” (disturbing). This time Ill do lots of trial and error before the stuff even gets near my precious mound of styrene, but like I said, im just looking for something that will be recognizable as an atempt at Dark yellow, and anything from a mustard color to a rotten banana is good enough for my first german armor attempt.
You can try some of the online hobby suppliers and see if they have the Model Masters II line. Some even sell Model Master paint sets, one is for German Armor
You can get a cool paint set here at squadron.
