How to make bed rolls and blankets

I was reading a intersting article in one of Shepard Paine’s diorama books on how to make bed rolls and such. It is a VERY cheap and easy technique.

All you need are tissues, Elmors glue, water, string, and maybe photoetched buckels.

This is how you do it, you take a tissue, fold it into a square, pour water onto it, fold two corners inward toward the center and then roll it up. After the water has dried or been squeezed out, you coat it with elmers glue. When this is dry, you tie some strings around it to make it look like it is tied up, prime it and paint it. THe best part is, its cheap and it looks pretty good considering it took me about 1 hour to make 12 of them. I’ll post some pics when I’m done, right now the glue is drying.

…modeling 101…

don’t mind Manstein, this was very insightful ww2modeler… I will definitely give it a try.

Thanks for the heads up

…easy there mr king tiger…I was simply referring to the fact that this is a basic modeling technique…it was in no way meant to be derogatory to the person posting it…lighten up there…someone deputize you in the posting police force? next time you jump on me like that I will report it

David: The type of tissue you use is very important. Don’t use facial tissue because when dried, it leaves a very out of scale texture – almost looking like 1/35 tree bark. You want to use the type of tissue found in gift boxes or new men’s dress shirts. Crumple it up to break up any longer fibers and then use it like you earlier mentioned.

Thanks for the help T26. I’ll try it like you said.

I’ve never had any issues usin kleenex as a bed roll! Toilet paper yes, kleenex no! Try and find what works best for you bro!

I’ve never had any problems using facial tissue such as Kleenex either. What you could do to cut out a step is mix the Elmers glue with the water.

Kleenex and Elmer’s Glue works fine.

TP and Elmer’s Glue, not so fine.

I’ve used this same Shepard Paine technique for years, with great results.

Good tip for all us Model 101 guys.

when I did this tarp on my t-34, I had read about, but never tried the elmers glue method-(or making a tarp for that matter!)- I was worried how it may appear in 1/16 scale when photographed-- you don’t want any little fuzzy hairs showing- but still didn’t want to lose detail- anyway, to get to the point, what I did was make the tarp out of ‘gift wrap’ tissue, roll it, tie it and then heavily brushed it with ‘future’-- dried it with a hair dryer and then just air brushed it with MM acryl-- similar ways to get to the same end-- just a thought-- thanks-- tread[8D]-

This is the method I use. I also tie some sewing thread where the straps are to go, so that the “tightening” remains once the tissue had dried. The thread is then cut and Tamiya tape strips cut to appropriate width are used as straps.

Gets a bit tricky in 1:72, but looks good when done.
