It’s my first time to use the forum so if I make a mistake, pls. bear with me. I collect SCI-FI themed model kits and I keep encountering manufacturing defects on some of these.
Here’s the situation: given Parts A and B that when you put these together they come out as evenly flat, which is the correct effect. All that needs to be done is to apply putty on the gap between the two parts, sand it, and voila…a perfect assembly. However, imagine the same parts but one of them is thicker than the other. When put together, it shows an uneven surface instead of being flat as what it was supposed to.
Do you have any recommendations or suggestions on how I can fix uneven parts? Hope you can help on this.
A lot of times that’s caused by the connector pins between the two pieces not being aligned correctly, you can remove the pins from the pieces and align them by hand. If that’s not the case then another option is sanding and putty, you might have to rescribe detail in that case. Or you can build up the lower half of the piece with styrene, putty, wood etc so there will be a flush surface, which is a better option if the two pieces have a lot of surface detail you don’t want to sand away. If sanding is your only option, you can put tape over the rest of the piece not to be sanded so your sanding action doesn’t disturb it too greatly.
