How to fix a yellowed vac canopy

Hi Guys:

I recently purchased Planet Model’s 1/48 Treibflugel. Great little kit, simple build - interesting subject! The included vac canopy has yellowed and I was wondering if there is a way to return the plastic to clear? Sunshine perhaps? I know it works for decals…

Any suggestions?

I don’t think that would be a good idea. Try using Windex to clean it.

Are you a smoker? If so, do the Windex thing… If it’s not nicotine, try bleaching it… 50-50 mix of water and bleach may work… It won’t do any damage to the plastic, paint will be a goner though…

It also depends on the type of plastic it is made of. But if the kit was purchased through the manufacture it could be a coating to protect the canopy from scratches.

Would buffing it witha polishing compound perhaps remove the yellow from the surface?

Or is the yellow present through-out the material thickness?

Thanks everybody! I appreciate the help.

I am not a smoker, the part came out of the box yellowed. I suspect it has been sitting on the shelf for a while…

I will post a close-up of the canopy in question to give everyone a better idea of what I am up against!

As promised here is a pic of the yellowed canopy. It’s a little darker than pictured, the flash washed the color out a bit.

Ahh… vac-formed acetate I suspect… Try trimming off that excess into four strips and soaking one in straight clorox and see what happens… If it doesn’t destroy the sample strip and clears up, it might be a coating on the acetate that’s yellowed, rather than the acetate itself… If it gets eaten, try the remaining strips in some other types of cleaners… At any rate, by using the strips, you’ll avoid destroying the canopy…

It also appears the the canopy itself isn’t as bad as the thicker flash around it, so it might not show much at all on the painted model… Unless you paint it white, that is…
