Hi all, ive been wanting to do a large Dio in this scale for ages.Ive been collecting imfo and models and material over the last few years. My intentions is to build it in sections that will join together as to make it easier to manouver about. Most of my inspiration on this comes from Railway modeling. So i got up this morning and thought right im taking the day off and im starting this dio and ive done quite well in one day. First off ive cut and braced a piece of thin plywood and sanded the edges, next up ivestarted to sculpt some polystyrene into the desired shape im looking for. ive got an idea in my mind as to what im after and its essential to plan or scetch your dio before you start. Im wanting a road over astone bridge and the land to taiper down to a town or farm with a chuch set back with a graveyard.
Check your dimentions of buildings and vehicles, ive used some that ive built previously.
Then ive covered the road and bridge section in polyfiller mixed with pva to stop it cracking. Next up came the covering of the banks with a hanging basket liner. This was glued down with pva and then teased to make the grass stick up. I then added areas of fine foliage and brambles made out of horsehaire and scenic fine turf glued on for foliage.
Then i scribed out the stones on the bridge with a toothpick.
Then added some more foliage.
This will need spraying to bring all the landscape together with shades of green. Thats all ive done but thats in one day so not so bad. More very soon[tup]
Today i have painted river bed in shades of dark brown/green at edges and lighter green in middle. I then painted stonework on bridge and painted the road which will need weathering more at a later date.Ive blended some of the grass area,s and poured my first layer of resin for the river.
The hbuildings ive made out of cerial boxes covered with brick paper then cornerstones and individual tile strips cut out of paper, then painted and weathered with a hole in the base for grain of wheat lightbulbs to be added later. I might render the buildings with filler and pva (glue) to more reprecent the French type of buildings.
IT MAKES IT A LOT MORE FUN WHEN YOU MAKE EVERYTHING RATHER THAN BUY!
Wow, this has really got my juices flowing. I’ve been bitten by the small scale bug and been doing a bit of browsing for small scale buildings and other stuff. I can’t wait to see more.
Cheers Doog, ive made this the width to fit on a standard worktop and im making it in sections so that it can be stored and moved easier. tTonight ive rendered a couple of the buildings the same way i would do a full size house . Ive done it with filler& mixed in some pva glue to help it addhere to the model. I wanted a finnish that was a little uneaven and slightly chipped .I wasnt completly happy with plain brickwork buildings as it didnt portray the look i was after.
These building cost about A pound to make ,bargain.
This is incredible, the whole scene. The shot taken with the trees in the background could fool you, if you weren’t aware of what you were looking at. And those buildings look remarkable.
This is amazing…I’ve always wanted to do a large sectional diorama but could never figure out what I wanted to portray…This my friend is stunning…your building work is amazing…you are truly an artist…will be looking forward to more pix.
Thanks Mark and here,s my latest update. Poured second layer of resin to river fixed two buildings down and added weeds round edges and layed some more grass and undergrowth down.
Just havin a mess about with a couple of additions to get a taster of things to come.
These are great pictures…looking at this and other dioramas, some people are real strong on the scenery side and weak on the model…others are strong modelers…with weak scenery…It’s like how I play golf…great drives but can’t putt to save my life!! Very hard to do both well…you however are doing it!! I’m anxious to see how it all ties together…great job
Cheers Mark , thats really nice of you to say so ,i suppose being a part time Artist helps no end. But hey were all artists on here. I will sleep well tonight knowing my work is not in vein.[tup]
You keep saying that this is gonna take some time but, I swear, didn’t you just start this like 2 days ago??!! You are blasting through what would take me weeks to pull off.
