Maybe is the 1000th time that somebody talks about the number of unassembled kits in stock. I wonder how much is too much… I have so far 130.
Also, I’ve being wondering if there is a solution to the following problems:
when all your stock consists of planes and somehow you are having this “new” affection for armour?
am I going to be able to build all this before I die ?- assuming a peaceful death when I am 99 years old
should I accept a job relocation after knowing that I have to move along that stock…
Any thoughts?
Been there…done that…mostly sold out. After determining that it would have taken me approximately 827 years to complete all the kits I had, things had to change. I narrowed my focus from W.W.II armour to W.W.II allied armour and then went even further than that and became what I am today…just a Shermanfreak. LOL
How much is too much? Don’t know. Havent reached that point yet. I sold all my armor kit about ten years ago and now only have aircraft kits. How many do I have? Too many to count, but someday I will build them and even add more to my collection.
Too many? My unbuilt kit collection is in the four-digit range and I still continue to buy more. I suppose I need professional help, but that’s one for Dr. Phil. I came to a decision a while back to limit the scope of what I collect. I’m now selling tons of kits on consignment and ebay. Even with my “new” collecting philosophy, I will still have many kits but hopefully far less that the estimated 2000 or so 1/72 airplanes that I have now. If it’s any consolation, every modeler I know has a sizable “stash” of kits - usually a couple hundred or so.
My perspective on ‘too much’ would depend on a couple of things:
How much do you normally build? A guy who builds 20 kits per year is different than someone who builds 1 or 2.
Are you a ‘collector’ or a ‘builder’. Collecting is fine if that’s your hobby. Just don’t pretend you’re a ‘builder’ if your not building.
I see kits everyday that I want to add to my ‘stash’. It’s usually a passing fad and I’ve been able to resist the urge. I have a rule that I NEVER buy a kit on impulse. I always leave it on the shelf, then go home and look at my stash. Usually there’s something in there that I want to build MORE than the one I just saw and my ‘urge’ goes away. Every now and then there is a special item that I can’t pass up though…
We could all keep this pretty simpple with having enough or not but who’s to say one may never know what the next project will bring so having a good reserve comes in handy for the unexpected search for parts and a good list of others with many kits willing to work with you comes in handy also. Don’t really worry about the completion of what I have but the probablility of having what I need at that particular point in time that I begin to look for a certain part that I need. Enough of the rambling time to get some work done. Really enjoying the site…
No such thing as too much, unless you talk to my wife.
Like you I have 130 + kits but in a variety of genre’s. Some kits I intend to build and others are investments. At some point I will sell some or all of them off, but until then… I have left instructions with my kids to keep what they want but to sell the rest, I really don’t want to see them at the Goodwill…
You know…it’s not exactly pertaining to having too many unassembled kits, but in my will…I’ve asked that all my hobby stuff, that the family doesn’t want for themselves, be donated tothe local boys country here in Houston.
That would be all my RC cars, sports equipment, (now modeling), and such…
There are other threads where we talk about how to get kids and others involved into this hobby, to keep it going…this is a good way…
Places like Boys country or toys for tots and such…these are places where we can instill a love for modeling at an early age. Some of these kids would LOVE stuff like this…
I was pushing 100 a couple years ago. But I have put myself on model probation since then. I only buy “must have” kits, like Tamiya’s new P-47 Thunderbolt. But the numbers are going down. I would like to get down to about ten unbuilt kits. I have also started to build a lot more 1/72 scale a/c, I can build these much quicker due to the lack of detailing needed.
There is no such thing as too many kits.
The better question to ask may be “How many kits do you need?” and the answer to that one would be “Just one more.”
Myself, I haven’t counted my kits to get an exact number (I’m actually a little scared to) but my best, rough, guesstimate would be 100-150. My opinion on it is even if I never get some of those kits built though, half of the fun of modelling is just opening that box, pulling out the sprues, and dreaming/planning/scheming about what you would like to see happen to all those little pieces of plastic. That to me is worth the price of admission right there. And, as they say in the ships forum, “Whatever floats your boat!”
Too many kits! Blasphemy. You can always add “just one more” whether you buy 'em to build or buy 'em to think about building 'em. My wife doens’t ake me if I need a kit I buy any more. She just asks “where will you find the room?”. Regards-Ed
You can never have ‘too much’. How many of you saw a kit years ago and passed it by only to have to purchase it later at ‘collector’ prices just because you want to build it now. I believe that if you ‘might’ want to build a kit, buy it. If you later decide that you don’t want to build it, you can sell it, pass it on to a child to build, donate it to the local club for a raffle prize, or give it to your wife as a ‘sacrifice’.

I have about 230 or so.to many? my wife would say that .But the kids have gotten interested in building.That will hold her at bay for awhile. At least until they start their own collections. But seriously I am affraid to purdge my collection becouse there is a varity of differnt kits.Aircraft,armor,boats ,cars and in different scales.This way I can build what ever I am in the mood for with minimal cost. have fun with it!
Thanks, after all, I think that everyone has always a good way to see it and some of your suggestions are really worthy.
Anyway, though I had been in probation in the last 3 months, I still look at the hobby shop shelves so I can find that ultimate kit that I might buy, even under my wife’s approval.
Here’s another angle:
I have about 250 unbuilt kits, around half of them back in the States, and half here in Japan. There’s usually always something on the workbench, and if the going gets rough, if I lose focus, or otherwise have a hard time with a certain project, nothing clears my head more or gets me back into a creative modeling mood than just browsing through that collection of unbuilts. It takes my mind off the woes of the current project while keeping me focused on modeling in general. I’m usually rarin’ to get back to the current project after a quick sabbatical with the unbuilt collection.
