I’ve just gotten back into modeling and I have to say this time around I’m getting more into making my models look more realistic. I hate to admit when I was first building models I blew alot of them up with firecrackers as a kid. But, then again these models were alot freaking cheaper back then too.
Anyway, as a more mature modeler now I would like to know how to use these Tamiya weathering kits and sticks. Up unitl now I have been dry brushing or wet brushing and using pastel chaulks to dust up the armor. From the posts that I’ve read the set and sticks seem to do a pretty good job.
I would just like to hear from all of you out there on how to start using these items.
thanks,
Tom
Also, if you guys know some good websites to get models I would appreciate that too. I’ve been using greatmodels.com and they have some pretty good prices. Their at least 20.00 - 15.00 dollars cheaper than hobby town USA.
Hey Cougar, first off welcome to the forums! [#welcome]
I have some experience with the Tamiya weathering stuff…the sets (A-D) are sort of like pastels, more accurately wet pastels. You can try lots of different things with them (I’m still experimenting) either using the supplied double-ended tool, or some other applicator. If you do make a mistake, they clean off fairly well, but usually not completely. Just be sure you really want whatever color you’re using where you’re putting it! [;)]
The sticks I have limited usage with, picked up both the “snow” and “mud” flavors…they’re really for when you want to add some serious texture to what you’re modeling. You can cake that mud one on pretty liberally if you try hard enough. [:D] I’ve tried rubbing an old brush across the tip to get a lighter application, seems to work pretty well.
As for websites, Great Models is good, you should also try Squadron (especially if you hit them during a good sale)…I’m also pretty partial to Lucky Model, especially if you’re able to decipher whatever algebraic formula they use to calculate shipping from Hong Kong. [:D]
