I currently have a HMMWV on my work table now and I was looking for some advise on how to paint it.
When I do tanks I assemble the entire tank first without putting a spot of paint on it. Then, with detail parts off, I give it a base and wash and dry brush and all that stuff. But I don’t think this will work for my HMMWV.
What I use to do was spray all the trees down with the base color before assemble was ever initiated. Although with proper Testors, Model Master spray paint, or an air brush with a good technique, this wasn’t a bad idea, I now believe there is a more effective, neater way to do it.
Why I can’t use my armor technique on my vehicle is because you can see into the cab. At close look you can tell the inside isn’t painted.
I think the “spray everything down before assemble begins” technique may be the best bet.
I do my vehicles the same way I do my aircraft: paint interior parts before assembly, then spray the exterior before final assembly. It sometimes requires a bit of touch-up work, but that’s pretty simple to mask off, if required. It may take a bit longer to do, but it gives you the chance to get that extra interior detail.
If I have sub-assemblies that use one color I’ll put them together and paint. Otherwise I paint parts individually or prime, basecoat and then mask for different colors. Very small parts that won’t be handled only get color.
You could try this, prime if you’re going to; then paint the inside of the vehicle. If overspray might show through the body color because it’s much lighter or darker then mask the outside of the body. After that’s dried, mask the inside and spray the body. You may find some leaks you’ll have to touch up.
Same as Demono said. On something like a humvee you’ll need to paint, detail and weather the interior first if it’s going to have a roof over it. Then after assembling the rest of the kit, mask off the interior while you spray and weather the exterior. It’s a bit more work than doing a tank that’s buttoned up!
is it the tamiya humvee
if it is i would put the chassis together leaving the drive units to be dry fitted then sprayed the base colour the you could dissemble them to detail more
the cabin i would make up with the roof and screen just dry fitted untill all is painted the base colour and detailed
and i would assemble it mask and put the cammo pattern on
I really like the idea of asse assembling it in sections. I think that would be my best bet. Painting as I went. Most of the undercarriage is green. There is really no detail (nothing painted other then green) to mention besides what’s in the cab and the muffler.
