How do you attach PE?

Hi guys, I got some pe for my kt and want to know what to use to attach it. I was thinking super glue-is this right?

God help me! So many small pieces! How will I do it!?!

Thanks Anthony.

i use CA glue, (its basically a super glue) but it dries pretty quick. You can also solder the stuff on. I believe this will hold it on better but have not yet tried it.

If you can get your hands on some acrylic gel medium, you can use that too. My impression is that it gives you a very solid bond with more working time before it dries. It sells under the brand name Bindex, among others.

Buff, were do you buy Bindex? I think I heard of some people using it for mud and snow and a whole bunch of stuff.

I use CA. IMO i do not think soldering can be done.

Attaching PE bits to plastic or resin I use CA glue carefully applied with a toothpick .

Attaching PE bits to other PE, I solder them together for the most part now , but this is definately an advanced thing and you have to have the proper tools to pull it off , when done you cannot break them apart without destroying the parts . I like this better as it makes the finished model much more durable , I hate when small parts break off if you move them to be lost forever in the carpet .

Soldering requires acid plumbers flux (liquid/or paste ) I like the paste as it will hold the part in place somewhat til I can clamp it down for soldering . Clean and flux both pieces before attaching .
I also use tin/silver solder avail at radio shack in the usa in fine diameter , the smaller the better .
I use locking tweezers to hold the pieces together for soldering ( also use hackle pliers used for fly tying , these are great for this as the really clamp down )

yep, superglue is the way to go!

Well, one thing to remember is that super gule has a vertical crystalin structre: It holds things attached on top of each other better, not side to side. On some super glue advertisements, you see a guy hanging from a ceiling holding on to his hardhat. This is true, but if that guy twists the hat, he’s gonna fall. So keep this in mind. (Next time you glue your fingers together, just move them in a circular motion). I personally use 5 min. epoxy. The dow side of epoxy is that if it sets, it sets.

I started out using plain old CA, but didn’t like the lack of working time. I switched to IC-GEL CA and liked the extended working time, but hated the fumes and periodic skin gluing incidents. Now I’ve switched to Bindex and I’m pleased with the results thus far. It has about the same working time as gel CA, cleans up extremely easily, and has a billion other uses.

Is the kit you have a DML kingtiger from Ardennes? I have that but not built it yet. When I use my super glue, it tends to leave a white residue from the fumes. How can I fix this? Just use less glue?

I use super glue in a bottle, it comes with a brush so application is easy.
Here’s two tips for ya, if you have an excess of glue around the part when it is fitted just tear off a piece of paper and hold the torn edge against the glue, it’ll suck up the excess giveing a clean finish.
When glueing PE that needs to be attached on the edge such as a grab handle, do not trim all the sprue (not sure what it’s called for PE) off the part, trim it so that you end up with small tabs (in the shape of a triangle works fine) on the edge to be glued then get a very fine drill and make some attachment holes on the kit that way you can push the tabs into the holes and the glue will fill any remaining gap, this gives a very strong bond.

John, you can use it for all that too. Ausf is the real expert on it. You can get it from artists supply stores. Bindex is made by a french company called Pebeo. There are other brands too. What you’re looking for is acrylic gel medium. It’s basically the sticky part of the paint without the pigment. HTH.

I use CA for a few parts, but i have now switched to Plextol ( another brand of acrylic binder ) It works great. I also solder PE parts to other PE parts.

I’ve always used CA (super glue) with favourable results. I have a couple of popsicle sticks that I sharpen to a long, fine point, and use this as an applicator.

If it foggs on you, then you are using way to much glue.

thanks buff. I found out about it through ausf, with his snow technique.

Anytime, John. My pleasure.
