how do i get clear parts that have yellowed from a vintige sting bat kit

hi, i recently joined fsm & so far its been alot of help. iv been in the hobby since the early 80s so about 30 years now. but recently iv been buying vintage model kits that i once built when i was a child. i just received a testors sting bat & a russian mig-37b ferret-e stealth fighter unopened from the late 80 s. so after druelling all over the both of them i opened the sting bat & everything looked in great shape but the clear parts are badly yellowed from age. does anyone have a idea on what to use to get them clear again? thanks in advance.

Hey, just call them “tinted” and move ahead! Problem solved and you now have those snazzy tinted canopies. [:D]

I’ve seen it work for decals, so it might work for clear parts too. Try sitting them in bright sunlight (not to hot as to melt them) for a few days and see if they clear up. Maybe it’s just on the surface, if so some polishing followed by a Future dip might fix it.

You might also try polishing with some very fine sandpapers. You can get a variety pack of polishing sandpapers from Alpha Abrasives at your local Hobby Lobby. I’d start at maybe 2000 grit and go up through 12000, then dip in Future. The yellowing might just be on the surface of the plastic, so you could polish it out this way. Just my .02.

Stop what you are doing!!

The clear parts from the Stingbat are molded in a yellow tint. They were made that way.

Here’s a post I made on it about 10 years ago: cs.finescale.com/…/2628.aspx

Here’s a photo of the yellow tinted plastic:

There ya go! Tinted canopies…see, it was just that easy! [;)]

Academy did a “stealth” helicopter Hughes Defender that used tinted glass too. I guess it gives a more futuristic look to the completed kit.

your right! i just got my second sting bat & it also has yellow glass. i want to build the army version & the marine one. thank goodness i checked this befor i started to destroy a hard to find kit. you guys are awsome! thanks so much!

You are welcome. That’s why the immediate “stop” message. I didn’t want you to begin to “fix” an issue that ruins a virtually irreplaceable part.

i also have 2 of the original mig-37b ferrett-e. getting ready to start on them first. doing the black stealth version then the gray & white one. both of them are the 1/48 scale. but i need 1 more of the f-19 stealth fighters 1/48 scale. if anyone knows where theres 1 at i should appreciate it. I want to say i also remember that monogram bought the rights from testor & made a version of the f-19 stealth fighter. but it was longer i think.

Monogram’s snap together stealth fighter was an entirely different plane. Since they are conjecture, they made up their own version.

ya thats it. i remember that mystery plane box. its been many years but starting to come back. i grew up about 30 min. from rockford IL. modeling was huge when i was growing up. And then the hobby sadly started to just fade away. i remeber my dad would take us over ther and you could go ther and by certain peices or entire kits. Then every thing went over seas testors closed there doors to the public and that was the beganing to the hobby fadeing away and digital took over.
