Airfix have recently re-released their SRN Hovercraft. I’m thinking of buying it as it will be a change from my usual aircraft and armour. Has anyone built it and, if so, what are their comments on it?
It’s an old kit but that’s the only one out there, so if you want it, get it!
Hey Springy - I just received mine from www.Greatmodels.com . It looks so BIG I don’t know where I’ll put it! Haven’t opened the box yet, so I can’tgive you any advice or review about it., but would advise you compare prices at greatmodels. II think mine was about $25. I thought I saw a review in one of my foreign modeling mags, but don’t remeber which it was, sorry. If I find it I will surely let you know.
Thanks for that, fellas.
Stinger, please let me know how the build goes, I’ll be interested to hear your comments. Meanwhile it sounds like I’ll have to clear some shelf space if I am going to buy it!
djmodels - there was a thread recently about whether Airfix are good or bad. Someone said that a good thing about them is that they offer some unusual kits which otherwise you wouldn’t be able to get hold of. This one is a case in point. Also I like your philosophy!
Cheers guys.
Even if by today’s standards 90% of Airfix kits are outclassed by other companies’ offerings, theirs generally remain fairly accurate replicas and with a bit of work can be turned into fantastic models. And for the 10 remaining percents, well, there are like it’s the case for the Hovercraft, no other kits to go to anyway… Now if I could find that elusive Britten Norman Islander/Defender of theirs…
Hey Domi, have you tried www.kingkit.co.uk for that islander? i got one from them about a year ago and i am sure they had some more.
Greg
just had a look, they’ve got an islander/defender but it’s £14.99
You say it’s big. What’s the scale on that hover craft?
Woody - Funny, now that I’m back home I was just looking at the box today. I’ll open it tomorrow and give you all an open box overview. Will include some pics if I can figure out how.
The scale is 1/144th, but the box is still pretty big. I just got my 1/144 Airbus A380 so I will give a comparison to that also. Look for this topic tomorrow.
later, Stinger
Opened the kit today and have some pics, but haven’t figured out how to post them yet. I can email them to anyone interested. Email me via my profile in this forum and I will gladly forward them to you.
Was disappointed at the state of packaging of the parts. Many loose items (and this kit has a lot of parts - 250+). All of the smaller ones were still on the sprue.
As stated on the box, the dimensions of the model are 272mm x 158mm.
The bottom half of the box is of a sturdy corrugated cardboard, but the only thing bagged separately was the sprue of clear parts. (At least they thought that far!) Everything else was loose. No way to immediately tell if anything is missing.
The clear parts seem to have a slight amber tone to them, also.
Bottom line is though, this is the only kit available for this model.
Let me know if you need any more info, or if you want to see the pics.
It’'l be a while before I build this one.
