Household tool hints

Great tips. I’ll add a few more:

  • Denatured alcohol can be used for cleaning. I like it better than isopropyl because it is a bit more effective as a solvent, but still safe for plastics.
  • Pledge floor finish (formerly known as Future) makes a good clearcoat that is removable if you mess it up.
  • Super Clean (formerly known as Castrol Super Clean) makes a great plastic-safe paint remover. Submerge the model for a day or two and the paint can be scrubbed off with a toothbrush. I’ve used it more times than I care to admit for a do-over on a botched paint job.
  • If you use CA glue, and run out of accelerator, you can dissolve a little baking soda in some isopropyl alcohol as a homemade substitute. CA cures in the presence of moisture (common iso alcohol is about 30% water) and is hastened by higher pH. You can even use water, but alcohol will evaporate much faster.

Future/Pledge is no longer made, and Holloway House Quickshine seems to be an acceptable substitute. I’ve used it the last year or so and it works just fine.

Good catch. A bottle lasts so long, it goes obsolete before I run out, lol. I use Johnson’s paste wax to protect my cast iron woodworking tools from rust. I’ve been using the same can for 15 years, and just recently discovered it’s been discontinued. People are selling full cans for 100x the original price! Keep an eye out for an old half-full bottle of future at estate sales. It might be worth a fortune!

And it was so cheap that buying a couple of bottles is a lifetime supply! I came back to the hobby after Future went away, so i only know Quickshine, but i use it very generously and i still have almost a full bottle.
