I was browsing ebay for some desk-top paint racks and became a bit frustrated with the prices of the small units, and the material they where made from (cheap pressed board). I decided I could make a cheap paint storage rack for basically nothing. I just started snipping away at some old shipping boxes (cardboard), broke out the yellow glue and I was on my way. I know it’s nothing fancy, I seen some of the members here do some very nice work on wooden wall units, but my goal was cheap as in FREE. It is very basic but fuctional and I saved myself 30.00 to 35.00 USD.
My unit is not complete, I still need to add the brush rack in back and I may apply contact paper as long as my wife has some stored away, but it’s up and fuctional as is.
Step #1
I loaded up some paints to get a look.Step 2, I added the back rack.I made sure I could hold a varity of paint bottles in the unit. I know for sure Vallejo, MM, Gunze, and Badger will all seat very nicley.
Hi Mopar, thanks for taking a look. I was bowsing ebay for something similar and what I found was pictured below at 20.00 with shipping. So, I figured what the hay, I could make a better one free.
I’ve got a ton of paints. I always figured that something like the display racks they put the paint jars on in the hobby shop would be ideal, but that looks like it works.
i was trying to hunt down some display racks. The only thing I found so far are fully stocked paint racks at a HEFTY price. I keep looking on eBay and Craigs List to see what pops up. I actually found some good local deals on tools at Craigs List. I only use that site for pick-up, I would never have anything shipped through that market. I definetly do not need a large floor rack, but maybe a decent sized table top display would be good.
Yes, I seen this at another thread, it’s very nice work. Mine is nothing fancy, just snipped cardbaord. It’s always nice when you can put something functional together for nothing.
Question: I am working on a Revell 1/720 USS Enterprise carrier. What would anyone reccomend to get the planes adhered to the flight desk without making a mess on the paint or decals?
That was a great ideal on how to make a paint rack. I would never have thought about using that material. This is the one I made out of some left over pine I had then I mounted it to the beast, which is what my wife calls my modeling desk [:D]
The rack looks good and it looks like you could easily add on. As of right now I do not have a permanent modeling area, so I am relying on a movable desk-top rack. I may make another rack that will allow more Tamiya paints, I just need to dig up some more discarded shipping boxes.
