Edit:
I’ve posted a new thread in the group build forum to get it started.
I had an idea for a Group Build that is a bit off the wall, but if folks are interested, it might be fun.
I got the idea from my wife talking about the “Secret Santa” gift exchange they do at work. I thought about how many friends I’ve made on the forums, and wondered if there was a way to do something similar. The idea of a GB hit me last night as I lay awake listening to some chili cheese dogs I’d eaten earlier in the evening bark.
Here’s the idea-
Interested participants would sign up in the GB by Oct. 31st. I’ll keep the master list of names. Once the deadline for sign-up passed, I’d collect mailing addresses and so forth from the participants. (I’d participate- both as a recipient and a Santa, too, just like everyone else.) I’d make sure that who you sent to was not also your “Santa”. If we had an uneven number of people, I’d “Santa” for two.
Then I’d assign each person to be a “Santa” for someone else. Each person would pull a kit from stash, or buy a new one, for the recipient. Wrap it up nice, attach a card, and mail it. The criteria for the kit would be simple, to keep it level and affordable. I was thinking 1/48 scale WWII aircraft, no more than $20-$25 (not including shipping). Of course, someone could choose to go over, but to keep it affordable, the suggested maximum should be reasonable. The point is to join in the fun- an $8 kit is fun too.
So anyway, the kits would be mailed to everyone by November 30th. Of course, you’d see who the sender was once the package was received, but that’s OK.
Now- the reason you wrap the kits up is to go under the tree. You won’t know what it is. [;)] And to keep it fun, no one should revelal who they gave too, who they received from, or stuff like that until Dec. 25th.
On the 25th, say at 12:01 AM UMT, people could begin posting what they got and from who. That would also be the time that the GB would start in building, going through maybe June.
The GB would of course go like a regualr GB- some rules about OOB or not, etc. Nothing ominous. Just a fun way to exchange kits, share in some fun, extend friendships, and of course- built models!
Of course, the implication is if you sign up, we’re all working on the honor system to participate. Still- life comes at you fast. If someone ran into financial problems, the group could chip in and help, I’m sure.
Anyway- it’s a bit off the wall, but I thought some folks might find it fun. I’d love to “facilitate” it. It would be kinda cool to share the spirit with everyone- even if you don’t celebrate the holiday- you can still be in it!
What do y’all think?
