I picked this up because I wanted a large scale helo to work on and thought I’d make an OH-6 out of it. [xx(] Is this kit as bad as I think or is it just me?
So far I have to replace the interior and cut an opening for the exhaust. Is there any info out there for interior details. I have the instrument panel, I just need the floor, over head, and bulkhead details.
I might be the one who bought it from you, [:)] LOL. So far, I removed the doors and started building the interior, lucky I have a lot of spare plastic laying around.
Here is an in progress shot with the orginal front seat next to the kit. I reworked the aft bulkhead seats for the pilot and co and scratch built the rest except for the sticks
Does anybody know if the seat armor wrapped around the seats or was it mounted just by the doors? The tail fins won’t be that hard to change into an OH-6 but if I can’t get the rotor head done I might just settle for a MD500.
Thanks for the walk around site Sal, and Papa-Echo 64 when I get some more cash I’ll look into getting the32nd Loach.
I’d avoid the old Revell 1/32 scale Loach and look for the DML/Italeri AH-6/OH-6/MD500 kits in 1/35. Now, I do not know if the DML and Italeri kits are reboxes or not, but I do know they are superior to that old Revell 1/32 kit. DML did a sheriff one with sniper, IDF one and several others.
IF you insist on doing all the scratch-building associated with converting that 1:24 scale kit to OH-6A specs, be sure you add the tee-shaped military configured instrument panel instead of the vertical panel that I seem to remember as being included in the kit. Aside from that, he DML 1:35 kit is MUCH better than the Revell 1:32 kit, as Rob indicated in his reply.
FITTER
(My apologies WRT the quality of this image… I’m still looking for a better photo hosting site than what I’ve been using.)
I found a set of 24th scale race car drivers from Tamiya and modified one to 'fly" my bird. The drives also come qith two sets of Dave Clark headsets for an additional cockpit detail part. The plastic is really soft on the the crew/driver’s body so repositioning the pilot into a good pose was easire the a hard plastic figure.
I’m qorking n the exterior details and shoud be painting soon.
Another good looking project! I need to requisition some “time” to work on mine! I wish my scanner was working I had some interior shots of a National Guard OH-6. I just need to go ahead and buy a new one!
Here are some pics of the base coat and the start of the weathering. I’m scouting out some decals for the kit. Do the littlebirds still have the United States Army logo and unit markings? Most of my references are too dark to tell. The fit of this kit really stinks and I don’t recommend it to anyone who wants a ‘good’ kit. I’ve had some fun with it and if you want a partner for the 24th scale Huey it might be worth the trouble.
Charles, excellent work on that model! I’ve bought several of those 500s. I’m doing a civil version before I do the Little Bird. Does anyone know how to reproduce those rivets? Is there a way of kit bashing a new wind screen to make the later 500s? or would I just have to vacuform one? Thanks.
Nice work on this one. The Killer Egg is a pretty cool subject no matter what version you make. I’m still looking for a DML 1/35 AH-6, I think my dad found me a 1/32 OH-6, the old Revell kit, and I was going to try a conversion, but I’m not that daring just yet. Keep the updates coming.
