Hobbycraft 1/48 Ju-88

Has anyone built this kit before? I would appreciate your opinons. Thank you!

I built one a while back, didnt care for the kit that much, no detail and fit problems

Thad

I have one but have not built it. One thing I remember what reviewers were saying about it was that the rear facing gunner ports were to ‘frog-eyed’ like in they way the bulged.

And as THAD said, the detail is on the soft side.

Amen to all of the above complaints. I have’nt assembled mine yet and thinking about combining it with a resin bomb nose fropm Robert’s Models. I’ve had that part for a number of years and can’t think of any better use for Hobbycrap.

If you haven’t bought one yet, I think the Dml/Dragon kit, also reissued by Revell/Monogram, is a much nicer kit. It’s not an easy build, but much better detail than the old Hobbycraft kit.

Regards, Rick

This kits a bit of a lame duck in my opinion. I have built it, and don’t have much good to say other than that it’s a baisc kit, good for beginners.

I’d go with the DML/Dragon/ProModeler kit. My local hobbyshop had one marked down to $14- what a steal!

Many thank for y’all’s opinions. I am also planning on buying the Promodeler kit but I am just lookin at my options. Thanks for saving my butt.

Toadwbg, where do you live? I want to snap up that kit!. That is of course, if you haven’t yet. Hehe.

i do a lot of buying on ebay and that is cheap[:0]…whether you have 10 of the things sitting on your shelf or not, you should buy that kit.[;)]

Not a lot of detail, but basic shape seems ok.The intructions for the cockpit were bizarre, the cockpit floor is shown upside down, the control column to starboard with the pilot to port, and the pedals in the middle. The cutaway in the floor must obviously be above the gondola and the other errors are easily corrected.Whoever drew up the instructions cannot have seen the kit !! The pilot would have had to be a contortionist.

Sounds like a typical Hobbycraft kit…

I’ve built Hobbycraft kits before and I have stayed away since.

I built this kit about 6 years ago(JU-88C-6) The fit had problems and the cockpit had very basic detail.I was able to make it into a decent model with putty and an after-market cockpit upgrade.I would say that the kit is similar in quality to a 1970’s era Revell-Monogram product.(IE)Generally accurate shape,sub-par fit and lack of detail but can be made into a good model if you want to put in the time and effort.

I’ve heard a few people say that Hobbycraft kits resemble the intended plane, but lacks fit and detail. If you want to hone your modelling skills, sometimes it’s nice to pick up a cheap kit of a fun plane (like the ju-88) and model away!
Personally I’ve never built a Hobbycraft kit before, but I just picked up a Hawker Hurricane, complete with the Hobbycraft offering of photo etched parts…for $12. In a sick kind of way, I’m looking forward to it!

I’d stay away from Hobbycraft from China…
In this case you get what you pay for …
