Attempted modeling twice in my life, when I was about 10 and again when I was in my late twenties. Had no idea what I was doing, and coming from a small town, had no resources or anyone around me to help. Needless to say it didn’t last long.
Now with the internet and a little bit of financial independence (currently I’m in my late 30s), I decided to dive in seriously this time. I’ve watched tons of videos, and I’m currently on my 6th or 7th model after 8 months.
Enjoying the heck out of it, and really want to continue improving (especially in the finishing department).
Also spend my time reading, mostly science-fiction novels, but also comic books, and books that help me understand what’s happening on this crazy planet.
I’m reading mostly current stuff. Decide from looking at awards lists. Right now it’s ‘The Memory of Empire’ by Arkady Martine.
I’ve made it my mission to read at least one book from every mainstream sci-fi author. Haven’t read an Iain M. Banks novel yet, but he’s been compared to many authors of books that I’ve finished. Will get to one in time.
I’ve done tanks, a star wars ship, a superbike, and that black Ford GT40 from Ford vs. Ferrari (wanna try that again). Right now I’m busy with the Revell USS Arizona and the Revell F1 BMW Sauber.
I’ve got the Delorean coming via Ebay once the lockdown is over, so I’m basically all over the place. I really want to work my way towards F1 cars, for the moment. Was a big fan of the sport in the mid-90s. I’ve got a Tamiya Senna McLaren set aside, which I only want to start once I believe I’ve advanced from beginner to intermediate.
I’ve realized that I need to keep my cupboards stocked with 4-5 kits, even though I only do 1-2 at a time. It’s so nice, not just because of lockdown, but when you live in SA and have to wait months for something to arrive from the US or UK, it’s best to keep 'em coming.
If anyone is willing to help, I did post a question in the General forums about building F1 wings. It must be such a basic question to so many people, but I’d really appreciate any help that can be sent my way.
