Help with Tail Cones

Hello Finescale Forum,

Just wondering if anyone out there can give me a step-by-step on the best way to paint a weathered tail cone on a modern fighter like the MIg-29. I used gunmetal enamel first and then tried to dry brush small amounts of aluminum and steel but it didn’t turn out very well. I was getting ready to add decals to the aircraft so I applied a layer of future floor wax and now the tail cones are shiny. Will this tone down enough to be realistic once the dull coat is applied or next time should I mask off the tail cones from the gloss coat? Thanks for the help.

Hammer out

Hi Hammer,

There are many ways of doing this job-everyone has their own way of getting it done, so here’s how I do it:

  1. To get a nice “used” look I mix Aluminium with Gunmetal to get a burnt metal colour then spay it on in the usual way.

  2. Most of the time, just the right colour will do, however if you want to age the cones a little more just drybrush with a little darkened aluminium.

Don’t worry about the finish-once you put the dull coat on the model, the cones should be toned down nicely.

Hope this helps,

Darren.
