I recently replaced my Modelmaster paint collection with Mission Models. Used Mission paint on Tamiya spray primer a few years ago with no problems. But, i recently started a project with Mission white primer and cannnot get it to go on smoothly. I have tried their recommended primer/thinner ration and the mixture clogged up my double action airbrush very quickly with a thick coagulation that was hard to clean up. Primer didnt flow on very smoothly on the model.
So, I doubled the thinner ratio and used a single action brush. Results were pretty much the same with the same gluey like glob of gunk fouling the airbrush very quickly. Stuff is really hard to clean out of the tip.
Any suggestions out there or is there a compatible primer that doesnt clog as easily and go on smoother? i sent an email to Mission a couple of weeks ago but they never replied.
I have used Mission Models paint for about three years and have been very satisfied with the results, although their primers can be troublesome. I bought, and continue to buy, from Model Paint Solutions in Washington state, Their website modelpaintsol dotcom includes many helpful articles describing how to get the best finish using Mission Models acrylics.
Specifically, for MM primers, thin with MM Thinner/Reducer to about 50%-60% concentration and spray with light coats. Adding Liquitex “Flow-Aid” will help reduce tip drying. I usually end up applying about four light coats of the thinned primer, drying eah coat with a hair dryer.
I do find that some days, the thinned primer just won’t work. It may be heat, humidity or some other factor. The next day it will behave like it’s supposed to.
Using the paint successfully also requires thinning to about 60% with their thinner and applying with multiple light coats. I continue to be happy with the finishes that Mission Models acrylics give.

I can’t really comment on Mission Models primer as I have never used it, but my advice would be to go back to what was working for you before. That Tamiya primer you had been using is trouble-free and becomes just about the best airbrushable primer you can get when you decant it and thin it with MEK. I decant the entire can into a 4 ounce mason jar, and I get months worth of priming everything on my builds.
Well can’t say much, I only use Stynlrez primers anymore, for over 4 years now for both acrylic top coats and enamels. Just give them a good mix now and then with a Badger battery powered paint mixer because the solids can really settle out and it doesn’t look it through the bottle, especially in the black primer… Hand stirring once separated wasn’t doing the job but the Badger makes short work of mixing. I’m happy with this stuff, changed from lacquer primer. But I’ve never used Missions primer.
