I’m interested in building an Iraqi T-72 but don’t know anything about the type they used. From what I read, the Tamiya T-72 is the one to get, but I don’t know what, if any, modifications need to be made for an Iraqi tank. I know there are several turret and upper hull aftermarket items for this kit but don’t know if they are needed. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Gus
PS: I did just order the Feb 2001 issue of Fine Scale Modeler with Cookie Sewell’s article but any other help would be great.
The Tamiya T-72 is a T-72M1, which was the export version. It is pretty much correct for an Iraqi T-72 straight OOB. It is a pretty good kit. Some say the turret is shaped incorrectly, you can decide on that. Most of the AM sets for it are to make it a more correct Soviet/Russian T-72 and not the export version.
FSM came out with an article with photos on accurizing the Tamiya T-72 to make it iraqi. It’s not too big a job so I think the Tamiya t-72 will be the kit of choice
Thanks for all the help. I did check out those links before I posted and they are a big help. My main concern was whether the Tamiya kit would work as an Iraqi tank with minimum effort or if it needs any new parts. Seems like it’s fine straight from the box.
One other question though, did the Iraqi tanks have the 2 drums attached to the rear or not? Thanks again for the assistance.
Also it would be of help to us, if anyone knows which issue of FSM that this was in? I wouldn’t mind this article, but I doubt they would post it online, so probably have to order a back issue.
If you want a truley accurate Iraqi tank make it a burning wreck after being struck with U.S. Depleted Uranium rounds! Maybe make it a Diorama with some M1A1 tank treads going right past it!! That will give you a true to life tank!!! [:D] J/K!! Sorry! Boared at work!! LOL
