Help with Emil

I’m doing some research before I begin work on a 1:32 scale, Hasegawa Bf 109E (kit number 08051), and was hoping I could get some input from the forum.

I’ve read Pat Hawkey’s article about this exact model (December 2005 issue), but I’m not sure about what’s happening with the wing radiator boxes after the flaps are separated from the wings.

Looking at the wings, I notice that the (please forgive me if I get the terminology wrong) trailing edge of the radiator boxes extend to the edge of the flaps. Do the radiator boxes need to be trimmed back or reshaped after the flaps have been separated from the wings? Does the trailing edge of the radiator boxes that remain on the flaps need to be reshaped or removed completely?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated (especially from anyone who has already built this model themselves).

Thanks,

Sheldon

Hello Sheldon.

So pleased my '109 article is being taken seriously.

As near as I can tell, those bulges on the bottoms of the flaps are just aerodynamic fairings, probably to keep the airflow smooth behind the radiator boxes. They stay put. Get a hold of a Hasegawa 48th 109E (flaps seperated for positioning up or down) and you can see exactly what’s going on.

Pat

Pat is correct. The fairings on the flaps were for aerodynamics & are not part of the rediators in any way. I’m not familiar with the 1/32 kit, but you may have to contour them some when you drop the flaps, but they basically remain intact.

Regards, Rick

Does it matter which Hasegawa 1/48 scale 109E kit I get, or do they all come with the flaps separated?

Thanks,

Sheldon
