I know it’s the wrong forum, but I feel at home here…[whstl]
Anywaaaaay…I washed it w/mild soap and warm water before priming, let the primer dry for 24 hours, airbrushed the grey, let it dry another 24 hours, and then masked and sprayed the red. When I pulled the masking, the grey peeled in a few places. Not good…now what !!!
what type of tape did you use? Personally, I slowly peel off the tape, practically folding it back onto itself. OTherwise, I’m not sure. Bad primer? A little bit of grease there?
The most likely reason is probably that your masking tape was too tacky. Were you using like Tamiyua masking tape that is made for models, or were you using regular masking tape?
I use 3m light tack painters tape and yes…I put it on just before painting…paint…give a few minutes for drying and remove tape. Peel slowly back against itself!!
OK…now a modeler fixes the mistake so it is not a mistake!!
My experience for minimal paint lift ( in your predicament) is to remove the tape as soon as possible. Check the dryness of the paint on the over sprayed area of the tape.
Brutus I’m thinking you should look a bit deeper. Resin can be a real stone cold “female dog” to work with sometimes.
How the piece is cast makes a world of difference. Soap and water might not have fully cleaned the resin, keeping the primer from adhering. What did the manufacturer reccommend for prep?
Personally I have found whitewall cleaner (real caustic) to be the absolute best followed closely by Simple Green ( very user friendly, now my first choice).
The instructions said mild soap and water, and to let it dry thoroughly before priming…was also my first full resin build. I used a washcloth wrung out with the soap mix, washed it, and let it dry for a full day. Gave it a quick wipe down with a dry washcloth the next day and primed it…
I addition to the suggestions to use the 3M tape and Simple Green might I also suggest using Badger’s Modelflex brand of paint to prime your model…it’s an acrylic, is airbrush ready, and sticks to resin better than anything else I’ve found. Learned about it from a friend who produces resin model train kits. You can use the Modelflex to prime, and then use whatever paint you like on top of it. have done several train and armor kits, both resin and plastic, and have never had a problem. Sticks good to PE too.
