Help northern california modelers

does anybody know of any model shows or any events for the hobby in northern california? I search and the only ones I can find are in southern cali, is what we do really that unpopular where we live?

Priest,

Contact the local IPMS chapter in Santa Clara, CA and see what events they are sponsoring in the Bay Area. Also contact a few local hobby shops in your area and across the bay and see what events they are advertising. Two places there I can think of to contact is San Antonio Hobby in Moutain View and D&J Hobby in Cupertino.

Can’t help you on that one m8, but at least you live where there are a few HS’s, I used to live up in northern northen Cal, up by Eureka, in a one horse town called Miranda, and it was 60 miles oneway just to go to the only hobby shop around, between Medford Ore. and SF.

There’s gotta be something in the Bay Area or in Sacramento.

Check out this link from the IPMS website, it lists all the IPMS chapters in Northern California, along with contact info and websites for the chapters that have them. Get in touch with your local chapter and you should be able to get all the info you need. [:)]

THIS IS NOT PILITICAL STATEMENT!!!

Most peps in North Cal do not like the military, and 90% of modeling is military so…

I know this because I’m the Military, and we go to North Ca like 4 time a year for Motorcycle races, and I all ways get the O’ you are in the Military what a waste, you know you are wasting you life Bla,Bla,Bla… I just shack my head, and give them the one finger :salute:and walk off.

But My wife, one time she gave it to them… Then one of my civie buds jumped in then it just got bad… The Cops got called, it was bad.

THIS IS NOT PILITICAL STATEMENT!!!

It is a sad state of affairs when some moron disrespects a member of our military. How do these morons think they are able to live free without opression and have the ablilties to speak freely. My cousin is a navigator on a P-3 Orion station in Japan. If anyone ever called him stupid for serving his country I believe I would have to rearange his face. If you ever need any back up to deal with one of these brain dead morons just call me. I would be glad to help him “understand” that freedom is NOT free.

Soulcrusher

These people don’t realize that have the freedom to say what’s on their mind because so many men and women died to protect that right. Those in the military, like yourself, should be honored for offering to sacrifice everything so that we can enjoy our way of life and our near-limitless freedoms. I for one, only wish to thank you. It’s not enough, but its all that I can do.

My father was in the navy during WWII and participated in the invasion of Southern France. He was a gunner on an LST. Two of my uncles served as well during WWII. Another was killed when he was shot in the forehead by a German sniper in North Africa.

Thank you again SSgtD6152. I greatly appreciate what you do. There are many more like myself. Excuse me for venting, but I know of the sacrifices made…Your wife and buddy know too.

In the San Francisco Bay area I know of only two clubs operating. The Fremont Hornets and the Silicon Valley Modellers as noted above. San Antonio Hobbies sadly closed its doors before Christmas last year. There are a few other smaller hobbyshops, Talbots in San Mateo, Franciscan and The Hobby Company of San Francisco among others. Contact me and we can talk.

San Francisco politics is a strange thing to behold. As a resident of San Francisco I can tell you that some of our local politicians are considered not following the pulse or voice of the city. I am in the district of Geraldo Sandoval and I can tell you he is not liked by the residents of his own district. In the last election he won it because he had too many opponents (5)! Being the party candidate was probably the only thing that saved him. He only won 35% of the vote. His comments about the military were outrageous, and besides he is a lame duck and rated by the San Francisco Chronicle as the least effective city supervisor. Chris Daly and the Green Party is another story, enough said.

What do you say to these guys? You, Jeaton, TLP and I all live in “Northern California”. I am not a fan of made up statistics either. As our state has “given the most” and we all have more in common than that which divides us, such statements are an insult to all Californians. I’ve got to stop randomly cruising forums.

PS San Antonio HS is unfortunaely no longer.

I live in a town with about 40,000 people, west of Sacramento about 20 miles. In this town we generally are conservative, but a few miles away is Davis, home of the Toad Tunnel. I guess toads are conservative too, because there aren’t any around that tunnel. Every once in awhile the Davisites invade us, resulting in a fair amount of culture shock. Once when I was buying an airplane from a guy in deepest darkest West Virginia, he tried to get under my skin by voicing an opinion about the political leanings in California, and I explained to him there was more to California than the Bay Area. Seems like the farther people get from the dirt the more to the left their politics lean. Can’t really explain Orange County, though.

Modelling groups have taken a hit in Northern California as the Naval Air Stations and Air Force Bases have left. Silver Wings is still active in Sacramento, and there seems to be activity in the South Bay and the Santa Rosa area, but as the clubs get smaller the events they have the manpower to put together become limited. There is a meet in Yuba City on July 29, IPMS Dragonlady is putting it on.

LOL… and we’re all just trying to pay the mortgage, educate our kids and live the right way. Thanks for the tip, I plan to go to that show. I’ve got an Aunt and 7 cousins plus untold numbers of second cousins in Weed, Keddy and Meadow Valley: plus there’s an EC-121 at McClelland I need to see.

I’d say that intolerance and friendship stand side-by-side just about everywhere in the world, and I would only hope that by coming together in these forums we leave our issues at the door, resist generalizations, and share that interest we all have in modeling.

Back to the string, TLP one thing I’ve gotten into as a spectator is indoor RC planes. There’s a bunch of clubs here in the North Bay, which makes me think they’re around elsewhere. It’s cheap, its cool and usually is only a couple of hours to go to and see.

I’m at McClellan every Wednesday morning, I was in the RC-121D yesterday. Big Bird.

Wow a lot can happen in a 10hr shift. I read about the one in yuba city, trying to convince the wife to go with me. I dont know whats wrong with northern california because for the most part the people I encounter are intelligent and tolerant on an individual level, unfortunatly as numbers increase our collective intelligence drops and intolerance increases. I would have gladly served if I wasnt darn near crippled in a hockey game at 18. So now I live on the historical level of the military. I still say norcal folks are not half as bad as we are portrayed.

That’s great. I’m going to pick some days in August and send them up to you via email. Aunt B needs company and she adores my wife, so here we come. I stumbled into the Lockheed group build with two completed L749’s and an Entebbe Raider on my shelf, a Lodestar committed to the Liberation of Western… GB so the EC-121 seemed like the deal. Rather than spend $ 50 or so for a Heller EC-121 on eBay, I’ve got the ozmod dome kit, looking for a Super Connie, etc. at no doubt a negative balance sheet.

My design company is/has been involved in Base mods all over California. While we lose the service personnel, and give some ground to commercial builders; mostly these things lead to positive community development;i.e. a mixture of market rate housing, low cost housing, cultural facilities and commercial development. Kind of a perfect plannimg model because it all gets reviewed in public hearings, unlike the bad old days of federally regulated urban development.

Apologies- TLPPC is your monicer from now on. Is your future modeler the PINKCHEVELLE?

yup pink chevelle is the wifey, and she is pregnant with a future modeler. I guess since there are no clubs very close maybe I should just start and raise my own

Nah, I meant to say PINKCHEVETTE or BLUEBISCAYNE

Hey, BTW do you remember the Nut Tree in Vacaville? Most of the models that they had on display, which I believe were all 1/20, are on display in the International Terminal at San Francisco Int’l.

Yes, I remember those, and saw them when I picked up my daughter at SFO a month or so ago. A guy named Eddie Chavez built most of those. I think that was the name. He lived in Texas. That was a shame about the Nut Tree. It was all because of disagreements between generations. It was an expensive place, but it had class. Good food and good models, what more can we ask. The models I especially liked were the Curtiss Condor and the Zeppelen.

Well Guys,

I was raised in Nor Cal. I lived in nearly every city on the peninsula from SF to San Jose. I move out of state in 99 and have only been back once to visit family. I had no idea San Antonio HS had closed. They were my favorite HS when I lived there and I am sadened hear they closed. They had everything for the modeler and all the staff were modelers. At least D&J Hobby is still there and I have there web site bookmarked. Sad to think all the best LHS’s are closing their doors.
