I would like to build a Spit Mk Ia but the only one the LHS has is the Italeri Mk Vb. What are the modifications I have to make in order to convert a Mk Vb to a Mk Ia? (other than clipping off the cannons)
Thanks!

More than just clipping off the cannons. Different panel lines and bulges. Also a different oil cooler.
The main differences between marks are the engine and wings. On the early marks the difference in engine wouldn’t show, but the wings are a different matter. It would be far easier to get on the net and buy a Mk 1a rather than trying to convert a Vb, as there are plenty of kits of most marks of Spit out there
Didn’t the Mk I and Mk V have different props? It has been a long time since I built a Spit, but seems to me I remember the Mk 1 using a two bladed prop, or something like that.
The first Mk 1’s had a wooden two blade prop, but it didn’t take long before they switched to a metal 3 blade version on the 1a. The two blade would only be appropriate for pre-war period
I want to say that the Mk.I and V had different spinners. The Mk.Is could have the DeHavilland or Rotol prop, while the Mk.V introduced a new type. Different blade shapes also were seen on the Mk.V. Also a more blown Malcolm canopy hood was introduced as well. Exhaust stacks are another area of possible differences.
