Hello, Mike here

I got back into models in 2021 after a 40 year break, the rust is very thick to say the least. I build mostly Brit and German WW2 equipment. Basically everything my father used or saw in his career (7th Armoured Div, RE). Occasionally for a change I mangle a car kit or an aircraft. Currently learning how to weather ……

Id venture to say like 80% of us took a 20 + year break… its pretty common. Geting caught up is pretty mind blowing with all the new techniques and kits.

Welcome to the FSM forums, Mike. There’s still a lot of WWII kits to choose from. Some with full interior included in the styrene kit. Also plenty of AM sets available. Lots of scratch building still goes on in the hobby as well.

We just moved to new home , much smaller than the previous and my builds are all over the place, wherever I can find a space …. , I will get them sorted soon… had a lot of damage from the move….. fixed what I could. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:Now I need to figure out weathering, have tried a few minor things and watched some wizards on you tube . Got plenty of things to try it on :joy::joy:

Good looking work, Mike!

Those unrepairable kits could be used as a place to practice your weathering techniques before you use them on new kits. They also have great value in the “aw shucks honey, that kit got broke in the move! Guess I’ll have to replace it.” category.

Nice collection of models.

I concentrated on equipment my Father used or was used against him. He landed in the second wave on DDay, demolition and bomb disposal specialist. He was in for just shy of 20 years so he saw a ton of stuff, I’m always looking for the later ones between 1945 and 1959, Royal Engineers specialty stuff and anything else British Army .

Welcome, I returned after 30 years last year, as others have said, pretty common.

Welcome Mike you can find some good weathering techniques on you tube dry brushing with red/brown and then dry brushing with Crome silver is one technique but it depends on what affect you are after. Chipping is another method that can look good too.
