Hey folks great site!
Well I am new to the hobby and would like to start with WW2 aircraft in 1/48 scale.
Got any recomendations for a first build? I guess something with a one color paint scheme would be best for me. I would like to use rattle cans for the most part although I know I will need to brush some also.
I’m looking forward to hearing from all you great people here and hope to become a better modeler with all the great help I see on this site.

You found the right place to improve your model building kung fu.
I have yet to build a biplane and cannot comment on the subject of which 1/48 scale one to try, I do suggest a affordable one or two first then a 1/32 scale Wing nut Wings offering, they are getting excellent reviews in the magazines and by our online crew.

welcome to the forum i would go with an AT6 texan in all yellow or silver, but thes are the greatest bunch of guys an gals to ask any question on model kits. as for me i am a mere dilettante honing my skills and learniing frome the best.

Concur! Great place with resonable prices. Dont forget to sign up for the newsletter as they will send you coupons. Shaffer hobbies off Gravois(by Grants farm) is also good. If you make it to the other side of the river Harters Hobbies in Belleville is about the only game in town.
Welcome, Dale. You have come to a great forum with lots of great folks. It is amazing how folks in this hobby are always ready, willing and able to share their knowledge and experience, some of it hard won, with others, especially newbies. Feel free to plunge in!
You might also want to check out the forums on Kitmaker.net. It is a huge modeling site with different forums devoted to various modeling interests from ships to planes to armor, etc… If you are interested in it, and it has anything to do with modeling, you’ll find it there. I’m also on that forum under the same screen name, though I usually hang out in the modelshipwrights forum. I do try to take time to look in on forums that don’t relate to my particular interest (1/350 U.S.N. and IJN WW2 warships with the occasional German and British warship) since a lot of the tips and techniques are equally applicable to other modeling subjects. I’m obviously a ship guy, but I do build the occasional warplane that catches my interest.
One heads up. Don’t go over board with buying a lot of “hobby specific” tools, equipment, etc… There are a lot of things you can pick up at Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, even flea markets that work just as well, if not better, than the things you can buy at your local hobby shop at much, much lower prices. As an example, I found my airbrush compressor, a Campbell-Hausfeld with a 1Gal. tank, at a flea market for $40.00. Works just great and sure beats paying $100.00 + for an Iwata or Badger compressor as sold in hobby shops or on hobby web sites. I’m sure a lot of folks here and on other forums will be glad to give you lots of suggestions on ways to same some big $$ on your modeling needs.

Well I know that OD= olive drab but what is NG?
I guess those colors would be in a flat finish?
Do they both come in rattle cans?
In this case NG stands for Neutral Grey which was the underside of most WWII aicraft with the OD green upper.

Tamiya makes both colors in spray cans, Testors does the Green. They both shold be flat but to get your decals to look right you will need gloss (before decals) and flat clears (after decals). Doing this prevents the dreeded silvering that decals are prone to when applied over a flat surface. Both types of clear are availble in spray cans.
Hi dale, I’m new to the forum here, and i mainly make 1 48 aircraft. Tamiya makes an A6M2 zero that would be an easy build. Tamiya kits are easy to put together, and this zero is only one color, grey-green. I picked up a kit for around 10 bucks or so. You can even model the gear closed if you wish.

There are tons of nice 48th scale WWII kits out there. For a first build, look for a good name manufacturer (Hasegawa, Tamiya, etc.). You might want to also look at a count of parts. Normally the more parts, the more difficult the build.
Go for a basic color scheme as well. Do a little research beforehand and you should be fine.
