my new build , the soleil royal , I bought a kit years ago , the guy wasn’t sure if it was all there , and I got it for a song , forgot I had it and just bought the new version , pretty cheap too , so i’ve got spares , not a bad thing .pretty impressed with the newer molding too . even found my old imai rigging instructions , which are great .might eventually try to do something with the spare hull , see what happens .
started on the rear balconies , making it so you can see into them , knocked a door out on the top balcony and made access to go all the way around the balconies .
unfortunately , I couldn’t , I’m still waiting on wood decks and cannons from hismodels to arrive , it’s not his fault , it’s just shipping these days , and really with all the masking I had to do , it worked out easier this way .
anyway got a little bit more done , the gun port doors are ready .
I love the wood grain effect of the gunport doors! Was that a moulded detail or did you have to paint it in?
I saw a post on another forum where they’ve achieved a fairly convincing wood grain effect over otherwise flat parts by applying an initial coat with a lighter brown shade (like a buff or tan) and then applying an umber oil. After the oil had sat for an hour, they then took to it with a stiff brush allowing unidirectional strokes to carve the lighter lines of wood grain through the oil
Will be trying that as next steps on a current project, unless you’ve done something a bit more straightforward?
the wood grain was already there , white plastic , so I sprayed tamiya wood deck xf78 , then an oil wash of burnt umber ,waited a couple of minutes and wiped off , yours sounds interesting though .
