heinkel 162 a-2 painting help

Thnk you both for the profiles they help alot! The komet is dragon so im guessing the paints are model master num?

okay… i am thinking about doing 1.JG 400 the insturctions say to paint it RLM 76 on the belly RLM80 on the top with RLm82. is RLM 80 close to the u.s Olive Drab?

yeper, RLM 80 olivgrun is close enough to most shades of OD green. I don’t think there is a standerd shade of OD green. If you can’t find either of those just find the ugliest shade of dirty green on the rack and use that[:O]

Don’t forget that at that late stage of the war the Germans were having a heck of a time keeping to their prescribed standards and began to mix all kinds of stuff in the field. The odds of being wrong on the exact shades you select are remote. Merrick’s book on Luftwaffe camouflage is about the best source on the subject if you can still find it. You can always stick to the old adage that if it looks right it is right. Exercise caution when using profile drawings for your selections because they often drift during printing. By the time you post shade and weather the a/c your initial selection of the primary shades becomes even less critical.

I have to disagree that RLM 80 or US OD is a good equivalent for the right german Luftwaffe color code. Its right that at the end of the war available colors were used, but than german army green.

And for the HE 162 the color code were strict in use :

Here an example of White 7 WNr 120222 at Freeman Field

The RLM 81/82/76 is clear visible.

And here 2 further examples of the clear camouflage of the tiny Heinkel aircraft.

Warning: Use of restored a/c for painting guides is fraught with trouble. Merrick’s books are the definitive source because they deal with original a/c except where noted.

Of course if you’re going to model a restored a/c instead of the original then there’s no issue. I’d like to see the reference that says the He-162 adhered to strict RLM guidelines.

By that time in the war they were leaving half of the underside of the Fw-190 wings natural metal not to mention changes in paint formulation that causes color issues to boot.

Tango you are correct as far as the 162 goes. RLM 80 would not have been a color choice for this mechine. I do not know off the top of my head about the 163. RLM 80 was widely used on luftwaffe aircraft operating in mediterranean. It was also found as a molt color on a few D-9’s late war. US OD green very widely in color. so depending on the shade ofOD green it could be close to RLM 80. I’m assuming birdman is refering to the 163 in his post about the RLM 80.

Dcapone, that serise of books is THE BEST source for lufty color, paint camo, and marking. Do you own all 3? These books are to the top of my list. The second part of my top ten list should have posted soon. I have never seen them wrong.

I’ve only got two of them. I’ve got the Day fighters and the interiors book. Don’t have the nightfigther book yet but I’m working on it. I found a summary version by him as well on camouflage that’s pretty good too.

Thanks to all srry but my internets been down… will have to try tomorrow prety chopy now
