Headlight lens Needed

Hi all. Who produces headlamp lens? I need one for my KV-2 as the one in the kit is green injection molded plastic. Not really very clear. Is it something like MV products? If you know where i can get them in the UK even better.

I don’t know about the UK but this US seller does frequently do overseas sales

MV is your best bet. Wouldn’t someone like Historex carry them?

[:D] Try Walters or Campbells, the choo-choo people.

candy wrap!

MV Products are indeed the company you want, Guy, but I can’t find anyone in the UK who supplies them. I’ve checked the usual suspects, including Historex Agents, PDI Supplies and Accurate Armour. Small Cars, however, do a range of headlights from a firm called Y Renaissance, which might suit:

(they’re down towards the bottom of the list)

Failing that, it’s not too difficult to make your own lenses. Drill out the lens with first a suitably-sized bit, and then the tip of a no.11 blade. Next paint the inside of the lens silver. When this has dried, fill the lens with gap-filling CA, and set it with accelerator. Continue until you’ve formed a clear convex lens shape, and then polish it smooth and to shape with sanding sticks. finally, apply a couple of layers of Klear/ Future, and you’re done. I’ve done this quite successfully for the headlights on an Airfix 1/32 Type ‘B’ Bus. If you don’t need a convex lens, then white glue or Clearfix works just as well.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hey thx all for your replys. Chris ill try your method if i dont have any luck. I spoke to Historex and they do a product called ‘resicast’ and they do a selection of headlamp lens’s. Ill get them to send me some to see what theyre like. If cack, its your method.

Rios…Not quite sure what you mean?

you can use the tansparent kind of candy wrap. cut into shape and paste onto white or vlear background. You can get whichever color you wanted, just gotta find the right candy. check candy stores

I know some people also use those 5 dollar sunglasses. Cut and sand it down, then brush some future on to return the glossiness.

What I normally do is use my punch and die set. I match the lamp with the punch’s holes and use it to punch thru clear thin plastic. I recover the round clear plastic and use it as a lens for headlamps.

You could also use thin slices of clear sprue.
The sprue can be shaped over a candle or soldering iron.

An other tip that was made earlier on this forum or in FSM, can’t remember who came up with it (sorry), was to use the clear parts in LEGO and the go with either punch and die or stretch when heated.

The problem with all these methods is that they tend to make the clear plastic opaque, in ways which can’t be remedied by sanding and polishing.

Cheers,

Chris.
