Hasegawa P-40E "Warhawk"

Hello again,

I’m try this again, only this time using a different model. I 'm not much with a computer if you haven’t figured that out already but I am getting better.

I am a big P-40 fan and when Hasegawa came out with this baby I was really happy. I’ve built two so far, a ‘K’ and now an ‘E’. The one complaint I guess anyone can say is that Hasegawa uses a lot of inserts in order to use the same molds for many different varients. Not a bad idea when you consider the money they throw into R & D, but it is a royal pain in the heinie getting all those “new” seams smoothed out.

That bit of griping aside I would like to say I really loved building the kit anyway. Those seams just added a little more of a challenge to the build and it was a blast. Detail is great inside and out. Nicely done panel lines, very detailed cockpit, so much so I didn’t see any real improvement with using any resin. The landing gear is terrific but I think the wheels should have had the weighted look. I also thought they looked too big but that might just be me. There were no major problems at any of the main areas like the wing root and tail stabilizers. I built the kit straight from the box except for the decals. Those are from an old Aeromaster set and yes the plane was painted a type of Australian Foliage Green and not O/D.

I faded the paint by adding a few drops of light grey and then dusting it over the upper surfaces of the wings, fuselage and tail. Then I faded the control surfaces a little more by adding more light grey, masking off those areas I didn’t want to fade any more, like the trim tabs, and blasted away. I used Testors Modelmaster Enamels for the Foliage Green over Neutral Grey scheme.

I weathered the model using a combination of an acrylic ‘sludge wash’, thinned oils and pastels. I cleaned out the wing guns a little more and drilled the exhaust stacks. The three antenna wires are stretched sprue. The seat harness was made using paper taken from the kit’s instruction sheet and cut up using a method shown in a Hyperscale article by Rafe Morrisey.

The markings are for Capt William J Hennon, 7th FS, 49th FG, who flew this bird over New Guinea during early 1943.

Again I hope you like the photos, (I hope they come out right,) and thanks for looking at my post.

She looks pretty darn good to me! NICE JOB!!!

Very nice, Freddie. I like the overall finish and weathering on this one.

Freddie-

I was aghast from the color until I read your post! (reminder to self: always read the post before looking at the photos![banghead]) Nice job on this one, the weathering looks just right- sublte but noticeable. Nice job on a potentially difficult kit! [tup]

Looks real good Freddie. Nice work.
