Are there any differences between these three versions on the 1/72nd scale Hasegawa kits? Or do the kits come with options for other aircraft I.E. the F-4S can be built as an F-4J? I know there were external differences between the F-4B and F-4J but were the changes between the -J -N -S just avionics upgrades or are there actual external differences?
Got a “Liberty Bell” F-4J and was wondering how difficult it would be to model it as an F-4N or F-4S
Hey Voodoo, The biggest difference between the B and J/S is the nose, exhaust cans, B short - J/S long, and the wheels and tires The B’s were very thin and the wing was not ‘swolen’ to accomodate them. The hasegawa 1/48 kit is the only kit that I know of that addressed the LG-wing problem. I don’t know if they kept that detail into 1/72…
You can’t get there from here. The F-4N was a remanufactured F-4B. It also had the thin wing, thin wheels and tires, short exhaust nozzels and radome chin housing. The F-4N also had an ECM housing on each side of the intakes.
The F-4S was a remanufactured F-4J. They had the larger wheels, tires and the hump on top and bottom of the wing to house them. They also had the longer exhaust nozzels. Some F-4S models had leading edge slats installed just like the AF F-4E. Not all F-4S aircraft were modified with the slats as the Navy ran out of funding for the project. The J and S had shorter ECN housings on each side of the intakes, as compared to the N.
So in reality, the F-4N was a F-4B and the F-4S was a F-4J.
