I have had a serious lack of build moejoe lately so wanted somthing that would build easy. Took out my old hasa 1/48 SBD3.

The detail is quite good. I just added some control rods from the engine control quadrants and the seatbelts. I found it odd that they only had lapstraps…

I want to make a really worn plane so decided to do some oil canning on the wing walkways as the skin deforms between the ribs ans stringers. It is quite evedent on the T6 so I assumed it may be the same on the SBD3

Looking real good so far Theuns. USN aircraft did not introduce shoulder harnesses until some point after US entry into WWII.

What markings are you going with on this build?

Ta Stik. I wonder if no one knocked their heads against the IP before 41 LOL

I will do the standard blue/grey over light grey of VS 5.

I’m sure that one or two pilots knocked their heads, especially on carrier landings, before the shoulder harnesses became standard.

The pit looks nice. I haven’t seen anyone do oilcanning in a long time. That really makes the skin look real.

I got some acrylic on today and chipped the walkways. The colour is a tad lighter than in the pix.

The hasa decalks were a failure of epic scale, the oned I did get on without shattering just simply did not seat dow, even with solution. So I masked off and sprayed them on, that was an even bigger failure.

Now I need to decide my next move, either I sand the painted marks smooth, retoutch the paint and put decals on or paintstrip the whole thing and start from the start.

I decided today to just go ahead and stripp all the paint back to plastic and will re-do it from the start

I did the bottom painting today using black base and I have to say the results are better than normal pre shading I used the first round.

I think that it’s looking great, especially the oil canning on the wings. I remember this kit being the best SBD kit out there until the Accurate Minatures kit came out. Even then some people still believed that the Hasegawa kit was still better. Can wait to see it completed. Always loved the SBD!

I managed to get the sbd beat into submition but the outside light conditions have been bad so cant take pix. Hope to get some over the weekend then I will post.

For thise who want to build this kit know that the canopies need allot of trimming and wrangling if you want to pose them open otherwize its a nice kit.

The decals issue and paint on this model made me work hard but the results I think was worth it.

My camera is not so good anymore so pix quite poor quality.

Great finish Theuns! It has a nice weathered war weary look, typical of SBDs in the Solomon Islands.

I bought a bunch of Accurate Miniatures SBDs when they first came out. Even a white boxed special version. Never built a single one. Still have them somewhere.
