I started the 1/48 Hasegawa Macchi c.202 the other day for the Thunderbolt GB. Folgore, meaning Thunderbolt.
The c.202 was developed from its radial engine father the c.200. At the time the most powerful Italian inline engine was the 960 Hp Isotta Fraschini Asso XI so it was decided to incorporate the Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine, which was later built under license by Alfa Romeo.
This markedly improved the airframes performance and it was clear Macchi had an advanced design on their hands.
The c.202’s weakness was its light armament of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the cowl and two 7.7 mm machine guns in the wings. It wasn’t until the c.205 that underwing cannons were installed making the “Veltro” a much more potent platform.
I love Italian aircraft. Their lines are beautiful and well as their camo schemes IMO. I will be building out of the box with the exception of the Eduard flap detail set and painting the box camo, mainly because I don’t want to try the smoke ring camo or purchase the decal set, which I understand is very nice.
Anyway here is where I’m at for the moment.

The pit is complete. I added some detail such as tape for the belts, and added some holes into the seat.

The fuse glued together.

The port wing flap PE.

I should have more completed by this weekend
Steve
I love this kit. Can’t wait to see the end result!
I was just eyeballing this kit in my stash the other day. I will be filling this build.
Just curious, but what green are you using for the cockpit interior color? Are you following the instruction sheet mix, or do you have a good recommendation for an off the shelf (and hopefully not Vallejo)?
Been wanting to do one of these. I’ll watching this one for sure.

Verily . . . the Ferrari of WWII aircraft.
Looks great so far MC.

Thanks guys,
Stick. I used MM enamel pale green FS34227, what is called out in the instructions. I need to get RLM 78, 79, and 80.
The entire underside of the wing including the wheel wells, struts and flap interior is RLM 78. The only part that is pale green is the pit.
Copy that on the cockpit color. You’re not going to use Italian colors for the exterior?
According to the instructions those 3 RLM colors were used, but I will do some research on that.
Stick,
Doing some research from the Stormo color guide,
http://www.stormomagazine.com/RegiaAeronauticaColorsinWWII_3a.htm
this is what I found.
Grigio Azzumo Chiaro 1 (Light Blue Grey 1) or FS 36307 Light Sea Grey for the gray underwing
Nocciola Chiaro 4 (Light Hazel 4) or FS 30219 Dark Tan
Verde Oliva Scuro 2 (Dark Olive Green 2) or 34052 for the green
Most of these colors I have and what I don’t will be easy to find.
Thanks for challenging me to look further
You’re welcome. I knew that they used something like two or three different sand shades- a couple more yellow, and the hazelnut shade. As well as a few different greens. I’m not too keen on instruction sheets for color call outs in many cases.
Are you going to do a “smoke ring” camo scheme?
Yeah, the Stormo site has a wealth of info. I forgot about it.
As far as the camo, no I’m going with the box art. The “Macchie Verde su fondo Nocciola” scheme, or literally translated “Green spots on the bottom Hazel”
I was planning on the smoke ring originally but I didn’t want to try my airbrush capabilities or purchase the decal sheet. I did think of trying the method in the new issue of FSM by using Bob Dively liquid mask but not this time. I would like to get a c.205 and do the smoke ring pattern on that kit.
Yes I had forgotten about the Stormo site as well. Thanks for posting the link and reminding me about them. I now have it saved.
looking forward to your next progress.
Very cool Steve! Looking forward to your build. =]
Test fit and troubleshoot… good job!
Thnks guys,
I have some figures I wanted to add to the Macchi dio.
