I asked for and got this kit for my birthday. Looks pretty good, 29" long with lots of detail parts, some that are smaller than the 2 sprue stems they’re on. Question: Does anyone here know what PE sets I should get? I see a few on ebay, but it’s tough to tell where they go on the ship. I’m mostly interested in railings, sub-deck supports, ladders and the safety netting around the perimeter of the flight deck. And turned brass gun barrels. I’d rather not buy a la carte, and just get one set that has most of that. I also dont want to rebuild the whole carrier out of brass, like some super PE sets suggest (Flyhawk). Thanks. And I’ll keep you posted -GT
I bought the guns, wood deck, Hasegawa Akagi Detail Up Parts Super kit, Basic Parts A, B, C, Jack Stays PE sets and 2 kits of the Hase carrier based aircraft so I might know of what you ask.
The Akagi detail up set is mostly the girders under the flight deck. I believe the A and B consists of the railings your looking for. The C and Jack Stays sets you could probably do without. The guns were the MasterModler armement set which has both the 20 cm and 12 cm guns.
That is my Holy Grail kit and I spared no expence.
Did you finish the kit and have pics?
i can live w/o the jack stays. I did order the wood deck and related deck nets. Does the super kit include A B C sets or does it have its own set of PE?
i built a 1:72 flower class corvette that came out real nicely and the parts weren’t microscopic.Might be a good one for you, and also a Campbelltown.

No I haven’t started it yet, I am holding off till I start the Ships of he Japanese Flag GB in 2 years.
The super kit does not include A, B or C. I found that out AFTER receiving the super set. After more researching, I found that they were additional yet. I went to eBay and found the least expensive supplier for each. I’ll take a family pic of all I have.
BTW I also bought a Japanese pilot and aircrew set from Northstar as well as generic crew from Tanks vs Panzers off Shapeways.
Too much?
I wrote on your pic. What are the curved pieces circled on PE1? I assume that PE4 is the railings set, but what is PE 2 and 3?
Also, How many planes would there be sitting on the main deck? Weird that a $250 kit only provides 12 and the supplemental sets are also only 12, for a AC that can hold 91 – albeit most are below deck.
I found an IPMS site that explains all the sets far better than I ever could.
Also, you are correct about the aircraft. Hasegawa provides very little…but wait, if you buy now we will throw in…
Luckily [8-)] they have a soultion for that, You can buy 3 more sets of 12, 3 Zeros, 6 Kates and 3 Vals (plus what comes in the kit) to just almost provide enough Kates for the first wave of the Pearl Harbor attack. 9 (or some sources,10) Zeros, 27 Kates. Just purchasing 5 sets will just cover the second wave of 9 zeros and 18 Vals. See, I said you were lucky, that’s why I stoped at 2 additional kits to give an idea of what was on the deck. I invested enough, plus the figures form Northstar and Shapeways.
It’s going to be glorious[:P]…if I ever start AND finish it.
Steve- That’s a great webpage. Thx.
I forgot about the figures. Damn it! I have some leftover modern British crew figures I can try. Who’s gonna know? (Too many jokes there !).
I guess you can get by with 24 planes, unless you wanted to hide another 67 below. Maybe I’ll stumble into some cheap at an IPMS show/mtg.
I’d challenge you to a race, but I dont care as much as you do. [cptn]
If it’s easier, my email is gtmail77@yahoo.com
The figures LOL, don’t worry, I’ve bought British with bodie helmets, USN Bofors crew, IJN pilots and aircrew and generic sailors and you just can’t tell one from the other.
I’ll put the email in my contacts, mine is;
My 1/500 scale Akagi has 21 planes, and they don’t look 43% smaller than my 1/350 kit.
Hmmm. I’ll be selling it off with 3 PE spures…interested as a warm-up kit?
I also have lots of cat whiskers that are perfect for 1/300 [and smaller] scale antennae.
No, they fell off the cats, never cut off.
Off course there is artistic liscense,I would like to pack the deck on mine, but I seem to remember reading, perhaps Shattered Sword, that the Japanese didnt spot too many planes on the deck ? Someone more knowledgeable then me would know for sure.
PS I have had an Akagi on hand for 10 yrs, waited for retirement and move, should be able to finally start it by Jan 2020 it will be nowhere as impressive as some I have seen, but will give it a go on one of my favorite ships
Good luck with yours everyone.
No warm up kit thanks. I have way too much to do as it is.
Tojo, if you wait till Aug 2021 (I know, it sounds like a long time) you can enter it into my Ships of the Japanese Flag GB
