This kit was a bit of an exercise in nostalgia, having first built this kit as a 14 year old back in the mid 80’s.
It may be an old kit, but it’s still a good build, and to my eye at least looks like a Mig 27.
I didn’t bother re-scribing the raised panel lines, nor did I use AM parts as this was supposed to be an OOB build.
Paints are a combination of Gunze & Tamiya acrylics, and it took me about 3 goes to get the top camo colours to look right.
It’s not helped by the fact that I haven’t a clue about VVS camo colours and I ended up using Luftwaffe RLM 82 & 83 for the green and brown top colours.
The camo was free handed using my trusty old Badger 100, and although the edges are little soft for the scale, I like the effect.
Due to the raised panel lines, I couldn’t use a panel wash so instead masked off the inner edge of each panel line and applied a light coat of Tamiya Smoke.
The decals are all from the kit, as is the weapons fit.
I really enjoyed this kit as a break from my usual diet of late war Luftwaffe subjects.
Wow Karl, another beautiful MiG! Love the camo, looks great to me. You have a very steady hand for free-handing something in 1/72nd- not sure I’d be able to pull it off. [t$t]
Man, that’s a nice looking MiG! You did a great job, the camo looks just right to me. It makes me want to start the 1/48 MiG 27 in the stash. Thanks for inspiring us!
Very nice. have this kit in the stash, and i built the MiG 23 from the same period at the end of last year, but it didn’t come out as good as that. I went over my panels with a pencil, at while it was ok, it doesn’t look as good as that, might have to try that idea next time.
Also like the MiG 17, been trying to find a decent kit of that, what’s your thought on the AZ kit.
I am always up for a challenge. I built the Bilek MiG 19 last year, so i am ready for more. Though not sure if that AZ kit is still around, if its worth it i will keep it in mind instead of dismissing it.
